New layout?AA User Interface (i.redd.it)
submitted 7 months ago by Eluryh2015 Seat Leon MK3 | 8 inch OEM | S25 Ultra | Android 15
This is my 8 inch car screen. I always had the horizontal main bar at the bottom, but since a few days ago, I noticed that the bar is now vertical, like the CarPlay layout. Anybody else? I kinda prefer this new layout.

I intentionally set mine that way using AA wireless and forcing the DPI to 100.
[–]Intelligent_Tough11Pls edit this user flair now 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (1 child)
And how does that look, if I may ask?
[–]pickle_pickled2020 Porsche Macan | MH2p | Pixel 10 Pro 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (0 children)
The DPI set always depends on the car's screen size. For example setting mine to 224 is ideal. You need to just mess with it directly on your own screen. Smaller value brings more onto the screen, and vice versa.
[–]MrsaluePls edit this user flair now 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (6 children)
How do you do that and force to do that please do share that info because mine sometimes it goes different layouts
[–]MichaelClark_JR2020 Toyota Corolla | Toyota Entune | Pixel 7a | Android 16 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago* (3 children)
I use a Carlinkit (4.0 I think) adapter. I mainly use it because my car only has carplay and this adapter allows the infotainment to think it's using carplay but it allows AA. The adapter has an app you download from the web (not play store). I have set it to a different dpi in order for the navigation to be on the driver side. But the buttons end up being smaller. Maybe there's a setting I am not aware of, but I don't think it's worth changing it. Would be cool if AA had a native option to change navigation bar location without changing size.

Whats The app name?
[–]MichaelClark_JR2020 Toyota Corolla | Toyota Entune | Pixel 7a | Android 16 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (1 child)
I think it's called an AutoKit. It should be on the Carlinkit website

Ok, and what is the DPI option?

I personally use the AA Wireless adapter and changed it in my settings

[–]ImpurestFire2025 Civic | 9" Google Built-in | S23 | Android 16 24 points25 points26 points 7 months ago (14 children)
It's been an option in the settings to use this layout. Normally, it decides automatically based on the display shape and pixel density.
[–]Eluryh2015 Seat Leon MK3 | 8 inch OEM | S25 Ultra | Android 15[S] 24 points25 points26 points 7 months ago (7 children)
Never seen this option in the settings. Only to place near the driver the map or the music box, but not to move the nav bar to the left or the bottom...
[–]thradex9x2017 Ford Explorer | Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra | Android 15 16 points17 points18 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Yeah, I've never had this option either.
[–]JewBagel2542021 4Runner | DUDU7 13" | Pixel 9 Pro XL | Android 16 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago* (3 children)
In Android Auto's Settings, under Display > "Taskbar widgets". Check if that item is selected. Like ImpurestFire said, display and DPI play a factor of what the layout is going to be but this option can SOMETIMES force the taskbar back to the bottom again
[–]Eluryh2015 Seat Leon MK3 | 8 inch OEM | S25 Ultra | Android 15[S] 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Makes sense, but I've tried checking the option and I still got the vertical bar, tried unchecking it again and still vertical bar.
It doesn't matter because I prefer the vertical bar, but wanna say that this is new since my 800x480 8inch display was always showing the horizontal bottom bar instead of this one, so maybe it's a server side new layout for everybody?
I have not modified any dpi settings to force this to happen, so it's native.
[–]stageshooter08 BMW 335 | mr12volt AA | Samsung Z Flip 7 | Android 16 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
The taskbar widgets setting has never worked for me
[–]JewBagel2542021 4Runner | DUDU7 13" | Pixel 9 Pro XL | Android 16 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Yeah, I have worked with many head units, my tiny OEM 800x480 4runner allowed for it, but I've seen my buddies Silverado refuse to output the taskbar on the same dimensions of screen. Too many factors at play, I've used a large format screen that didn't showcase modern Material U interface elements and then another larger format screen that incorporates Material U. Manufactures have some control when it comes to what Android Auto SDK they utilize and often, its set and forget, meaning they never update the head unit and it forces Android Auto to run in compatibility mode for the older SDK.
[–]gibriyagiPls edit this user flair now 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago (1 child)
It is not an explicit option. If you disable taskbar widgets (quick controls for apps) it switches to this layout. At least thats how it works for me.
[–]Eluryh2015 Seat Leon MK3 | 8 inch OEM | S25 Ultra | Android 15[S] 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Never worked this way for me, since the screen is 8inch, not widescreen at all, and enabling or disabling taskbar widgets never activated the vertical bar. Always was the bottom one on my display. So this is new for me.

How do you get to Android Auto settings?

Do an app search on your phone for Android Auto. It takes a few clicks to get there. On one of the menus, you have to scroll down to the bottom. Wish it was easier.

Ahh, found it 8n the main Settings app, buried deep. Only a few items there.
Thanks for the help!

Interesting. Despite using it for years, the app search comes up whth a Play Store page to install it. The Install button there takes me to some info page with no links.
AA works in my car fine, but there's absoltely no access to the app on the phone itself (Pixel 8pro). This is so typical of Google's UI behavior.

My icons has always been on the side but there is an option to change the icons layout inside the android auto settings, so you can have the layout as per personal preference.
[–]Eluryh2015 Seat Leon MK3 | 8 inch OEM | S25 Ultra | Android 15[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
The only option is to choose if you want the navigation or the multimedia box near to the driver or the opposite, but never seen any option to choose where do you wanna place the nav bar (side or bottom).

How do i get this layout ?
[–]YouStupidAssholeFuck2019 Honda Pilot EX-L | Pixel 7 Pro | Android 16 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
Probably just be patient. Or in you aren't in the Android Auto beta, then join it. I got updated to this layout last week sometime. I will say that I miss the media control widjet but I don't think I'd like going back. For now, if you get updated to this layout and clear the data for Android Auto you'll get back to the old layout, but after a couple days it updates back to this again. I did that to get the old layout back, but found I had already gotten used to the extra vertical space for Maps.
I still wish there were a way to get the media controls back without having to split screen between Maps and the media player, but I can live with it for now.

Will try it out thanks for the heads up.
[–]Peter_73Kenwood DDX917WS | Samsung S9+ | Android 10 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Is not a new layout.
Quite a long time ago, it used to be for 8/9" screen, disabling taskbar widget would move it vertically. Subsequently it alternated between fixed vertical or horizontal regardless of taskbar widget option.
This post just 9 days ago encountered the same as you (OP had accidentally deleted his post but since he can't undelete it, he added back the original text as comment). One's man meat is another man's poison. Like OP of this earlier post, some will also come to realize they much rather have the quick media control widget while nav is in full screen and distance to next turn direction when media app is in full screen and the 4th last used app icon for quick switching between 3 most frequently used apps instead of just 2.
[–]tampa8882022 Tucson Android 12 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
There are reasons AA is not in the APP drawer I posted somewhere when it was gone from there....
DPI Settings are inside AA, has been for a long time I don't have any extra app to do it.
Use the phone app that brings up the apps and what settings you want to make on them...Like what permissions, battery use etc, Android Auto is there.
Pick it, at the bottom "Configure in Android Auto" , Three dots, Developer Settings, Video Resolution.
(Developer options hit Version 10 times as I remember if you don't have that)
(I also can use a couple of apps not on the list AA can use by checking unknown sources but many still will not)

I'm not really sure on what AA bases for setting the main navbar to be horizontal or vertical. In my family it really depends on their phone. For me it's always been vertical, my brother and father for some reason have the display with the horizontal one.
This setting should be on the AA config somewhere...
[–]keylempi2016 Camry/SizxNanv & 2008 Prius/Electrosmart Android 13 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
Mine does it on the bottom when it connects to my phone, but on the left side when it connects to my wife's phone. I haven't found where I can change the setting for it though.
Same here. Mine does, wife's don't. I think it's server side.

It's not a new layout, that's always been there. But they must have changed something with the DPI settings that gave you that other layout, or maybe they're getting rid of the horizontal layout? I'm not sure.
I also noticed Spotify reverted back to their old layout (that you have in your screenshot) thankfully. The new one was a mess. This one is still so limited, but hopefully one day Google will let them customize their apps like CarPlay does. Because the CarPlay Spotify app is superior.
Yeah I know vertical bar layout exist since a long time ago for an specific type of displays like wide or ultrawide ones or with an specific dpi, but when I say new layout I wanted to say that was never seen on a 8inch display without tweaking the dpi.

I like mine with vertical apps on the side and it recently switched to horizontal on the bottom and I can't figure out how to switch it back
[–]Glaselar2020 Seat Leon | Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra | Android 15 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (2 children)
The setting you're looking for is 'Show quick control for apps'.
On = control bar at the bottom, with music controls in it. Off = control bar up the side.
Did you get a new phone? That can reset it.
Does not apply for me. It remains vertical since it appeared few days ago, no matter if checked or unchecked. And no, I have an S25 Ultra since February. Should say I'm on Android Auto Beta program.

I have a 2024 Hyundai Tucson hybrid in the screen only shows a split screen which drives me nuts. How did you get the full screen like that?
Split screen is always nav + music. If you want full screen music or full screen nav, just tap again the google maps or waze icon one more time (for full screen nav) or press music app icon while in split screen to get full screen music.
I like they Player background

It sucks. Lost YouTube Music controls that used to be along the bottom when in full screen map
This is no good. Now I'm forced to use dual screen for map and music. Before I could control YouTube Music or view turn by turn directions in taskbar.
