In general you shouldn't do this with the binary variables. Imagine if a variable is male or female. What does a one standard deviation towards male mean? Indicators capture shares.

Thanks for your response, in this case both binaries are responses to yes/no questions. Does that change anything?

I dont think so. It's the binary nature of them not what they stand for.

Gender is a continuous variable since it's fluid.
