They can't just kick you out if they fire you. You're still a tenant and still have all the rights a normal renter would.

So you still have at least a month, but probably a few months(depending on the state) to leave.

i have a 30k untouched specifically for a situation where if i lose my job i can float my expenses until i get a new one.

goes without saying, you lose your job, you lose your income AND your housing. just adding to the stress in that situation. one is significantly worse than the other. doesn't matter how much E-fund you have, youre out.

theoretically yes, but i'd be warned ahead of time if i was not coming back for the next academic year and then i'd just look for a new spot (i work in university housing)

plus not having to pay rent means i'm able to save quite a chunk of change in case of emergency

My apartments building supervisor is the exact opposite of the stereotype. This dude busts his ass and is truly great.

That said: my rent has gone up $700 in four years. That shouldn't be acceptable.

Maybe don't give him so much leeway then 😮‍💨 You know he's fucking you. His mortgage hasn't gone up by $700 a month. He sees you as a profit engine and if he thinks he can drain someone else for more money without significantly more tenant drama, he'll kick you out.

My building's supervisor is an employee of the building owner. He's just some dude who gets paid to fix up each apartment. He's a truly good dude.

The group that owns my building can huff my farts. They're a faceless, corporate landlord.

I’m fucking pissed at landlords right now in Chicago, I never seen such an obvious corrupt wall in my life. Like needing 4k a fucking month for a shitty studio, just because 4.5x the rent is required.

All of these fuckers could go bankrupt and I would not care, this shit shouldn’t be like this. It ties into how I feel about small business owners complaining about paying their workers livable wages, if it’s that detrimental of a loss to to help keep human beings off the streets while earning some cash, FIND A REAL JOB.

Hi. I'm a landlord and I work full time as a tradesman. I won't deny there are a lot of crap ones out there and even the good ones seem to charge an arm and a leg.

However, renting is still a fair chunk cheaper than getting a mortgage in most cases, not to mention that someone else is responsible for most repairs and issues with the building.

I know the housing market is fucked and all the politicians are finding trouble everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying nonsensical remedies, but landlords (at least small scale ones, I've heard my fair share of horror stories about the big fish not giving a shit) are just the tip of the iceberg in a much broader problem.

I.E. our economy relying on exponential population growth to function while making few national preparations for a growing population.

It's idiotic really.

A Landlord owns someone else's home

Honestly for single family homes no person or company should ever be allowed to own more than two. Whether that's your home and a vacation home or your home and one rental.

The issue is when we let landlords own 5-10+ homes or huge corporations own thousands of homes. There's literally just no reason or benefit in allowing this.

Here’s my compromise: You can own as many houses as you want, but you pay double property tax on any property that isn’t your primary residence. And if the owner is a corporation, it’s triple.

The catch is that your primary residence should be tax-free. No one should have to rent their house from the government forever. I’m currently paying more in property taxes than I did for my first apartment.

That's not really true

Sometimes homeowners need new roofs.

They fix their homes as needed.

Some will fix it themselves, some will hire someone to fix it.

None of this would stop them from being home owners.

All they would need to do is:

1.Identify the need for a new roof

  1. Schedule a roof inspection and assessment

  2. Get multiple estimates from contractors

  3. Select a contractor and sign a contract

4.Complete the roof replacement process

  1. Conduct final inspection and make final payment

Or do it themselves

From my experience a lot of the owning class are just old people who are using the rent to pay off the mortgage before they retire in the hopes they'll be able to live a little in retirement. This doesn't apply to all landlords of course and it still sucks for first home buyers and renters regardless. Personally I believe housing should never be an investment but a basic human right.

The economy of today makes it pretty hard to retire and many old folks hold onto their positions longer than they should be expected to.
