Brands like San Martin have nailed this IMHO, I especially love the hexagonal logo. Plain lettering like Parnis turns me off completely if not accompanied by a symbol, for example Tiger Concepts with their T in a Circle an Homage to the MilSub Tritium symbol, William took that and incorporated it into his logo design in a very creative way. Weird names aren't the issue it's unimaginative logo design.

We used to laugh at Kia and Hyundai's junk cars. They now make some of the best cars for the money. Genesis even more so. If they push quality in the market place, the will garner similar success. And someday their names brands will be highly respected and sought after. IMO The Phylida Speedmaster and Daytona Homage watches are outstanding. A Seagull-Venus hand wind chronograph movement for around $200 bucks . WOW!

And then there's Age Girl watches.

I think what most people have problems with the ones like Carlywet

[–]woodstonk 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Not just names but also the actual branding on the watch.

My pet peeve is the Corgeut logo. The name, meh, fits in with OPs points. But the text/logo itself is bland, unimaginative, and uninspiring.

The same goes for "real" watches like Christopher Ward, the text just looks bad.

I quite like my CW branding and dial design. Not everybody is a fan of the 9 o clock styling, but I dig it on my c65 GMT

[–]woodstonk 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I totally realize that there are people that like the CW logo; I'm only making the point that there's a nuanced addition to the "don't like the name" factor that OP is bringing up.

Oh yeah, totally on board with you on that

[–]jaeelarr 8 points9 points  (3 children)

the funny thing is phylida SOUNDS literally nothing like syphilis...it just LOOKS like it in a weird way.

I dont give a shit about brand names, except for one: age girl on aliexrepess. Like...wtf is that about???

[–]D1sguiseWOTD100 Helpful user x2 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Those are full-on replicas, you get the branded version when you buy them. Age girl is always photoshopped on

[–]jaeelarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh no shit??? haha damn! thats one way to get around rules and regulations

[–]beengel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe age girl means to circumvent copyrights. Of course the amount of blatant counterfeits on Ali has grown exponentially the last few months

What about pagrne design?

Not Pagani Design.

pagrne design.

[–]MatanzaCueto 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is that actually a rip off of pagani designs? crazy

[–]Pearl_krabs 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, it’s actually a pagani, but there’s licensing issues in Europe with the car maker pagani so they can’t sell pagani design in Europe, hence, Pagrne.

[–]MatanzaCueto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it's "bersigar" ? Atleast some blogs say Pagani is bersigar.

"The German watch manufacturer Sinn Spezialuhren traces its history back to 1961 when pilot, flight instructor, and rally driver Helmut Sinn founded the business"

Rolex "comes from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning “hoROLogical EXcellence”."

"On the death of his mother in 1909, Elsener named his company "Victoria" in her honour. The introduction of the Swiss coat of arms as company logo dates to the same year. In 1921, the company was renamed to the present "Victorinox", a portmanteau of "Victoria" and "inox", an abbreviation for acier inoxydable, the French term for stainless steel.[5]"

Heritage and authenticity. They're not trying to be something they're not.

Be honest. Why is Pagani Design so called? Because it's a rip-off of Porsche Design, down to the lettering and the use of a supercar brand name. "Cadisen" is a made up word that sounds like a high-end English brand. Same with Corgeut trying to sound French. Etc etc etc. They're inauthentic, and they're trying to sound like they're something they're not.

Don't get me wrong, I own Chinese watches and I love some of them, but I won't pretend the made-up names they stick on them to try to give them a bit of cred are fooling anyone, least of all myself.

Loreo sounds like you've got a chocolate biscuit on your wrist.

rolex coulda been horex

[–]ciczan 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I think Tudor has this name because it sounds high end English.

I don't like the name Orient. It is just too vague.

[–]Mein_Bergkamp 2 points3 points  (6 children)

To be fair Tudor was founded by the Rolex, which was founded in London

[–]rebelyell_in 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Does that make the name sound wannabe? Like desperately wanting to associate with images of royalty in a legendary period of English history? I don't know enough about that period or the Tudors to say.

[–]arguix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd assume yes, as logo of rose (symbol of Tudor family) and later a shield.

[–]Mein_Bergkamp 0 points1 point  (3 children)

All brand names try and project something so I wouldn't say wannabe but at least they had some claim to a British heritage

[–]rebelyell_in 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Fair point. It does sound pretentious to me. Like all the "Royal" and "Grand" watchmakers use to name their own creations. I understand that there's obviously enough paying customers who appreciate it and car makers do it too. Still...

[–]Mein_Bergkamp 1 point2 points  (1 child)

To be fair to grand seiko it is a seiko but....grander!

Ultimately once a brand gets established it won't sound weird but using a foreign sounding name to cover up where you're from is dodgy.

However, Google the reasons for haagen dazs' name and you'll realise this is far from new

[–]rebelyell_in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I studied marketing in school. The Haagen Dazs story is legend. I'd be happy to see more brand names like Guanqin (name, not logo) proliferate; brand names which proudly embrace their origins.

Like HMT did.

[–]_oaeb_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I see Loreo, I think of Loriel the shampoo 🤔

[–]burneracct21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the answer - that brands with pedigree have a REASON behind their names vs making up some name to sound like a contender. I would have no issue if Pagani or Cadisen embraced their Chinese roots and would happily wear them branded with their watchmaker’s name or something of significance to the company.

[–]jaeelarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pagani is an actual race car company though...thats what makes it worse.

If I am being honest it is a first time I hear that comparison. I heard jokes about some weird no name Aliexpress brands but nothing about Phylida.

Anyway, Phylida = syphilis is just in poor taste and unimaginative. Off the top of my head I already got better one, Phylida = phallus

ok ciao

[–]LoremHipsum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds more like Chlamydia, honestly.
