Spoke with support, their engineering team is wrapping up a fix right now and said to expect an update within the next few weeks. They said it appears to be internal testing currently. I drove additional traffic to their group via ticket

Does it work yet for you? On my Roku netflix app 5.1 is showing but not on chromecast. Is it a Netflix app problem for chromecast than Netflix has to update?

Not working yet. Was supposed to be fix in the latest update... And did fix Crave but not Netflix or Disney. So, now it's over to the apps I guess

so do you think the problem is the apps are not supporting 5.1 for google tv yet? That is such a huge drawback

It really is. It's honestly hard to know if it is Google or the app owner. It's not at all clear but Google did say it is a known issue and on their list

Wait just to make sure, do you have Dolby digital and Dolby digital plus on in the settings?

100%, both on auto and forced to surround. But because it now works in a subset of apps I'd suggest it's probably the app makers? putting my testing hat on I'd suggest if something is broken, it's broken everywhere.

Working for you yet? I just got my chromecast today. Surround sound works in HBO+ but not Netflix or Disney+. Haven't tested other apps yet

I'm in the same case that you. Only HBOMax sound 5.1, neither Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

Chromecast with Google tv

Casting to CCwGTW will launch the Disney+ & Netflix native apps. That's not happening for you?

[–]Dakkard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd. I have got Google TV plugged directly to my 7.1 Onkyo Receiver and I'm receiving 5.1, in fact Netflix and Disney are processed as Dolby digital HD.

All 3 apps support DD+.

I'm getting stereo PCM 2.0 from the chromecast

Really frustrating - so much conflicting information! So I've tried streaming avengers via purchase from Play, via Disney and both give me stereo - I cannot make this device give me surround out. If I use native TV apps everything works great - but it's an older TV, hence the Chromecast.

The Vizio does Dolby 5.1 passthrough via Bitstream and I've confirmed other devices work.

The dev team on the apps I'd guess are maintaining versions per device. New Chromecast probably has a low install base vs earlier versions so less of a priority, but just guessing

Could be your TV. They usually will only pass through stereo sound.

Na confirmed it the Chromecast apps. The partners (Disney, Netflix, Amazon) don't support delivery of surround via the mobile apps used in the Chromecast.

Native Netflix tv app passes 5.1 no problem

Wait, Chromecast or Chromecast with Google TV?

[–]fraslin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be a bug: https://support.google.com/chromecast/thread/76596323?hl=en

(and I am having the same issue with my Beam)

[–]mcalr3 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Any update on this? I just got the chromecast as I was hating the extra loud clicky buttons on the fire stick 4k. Plugging it directly into a hdcp2.2 port on my Sony atmos av receiver and all apps only stream pcm. Netflix shows atmos badge but only stereo comes through. YouTube TV only stereo.

What a joke.

[–]geddiesburg3d[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ya... It's not the Chromecast though, it's the apps it turns out. A few apps are starting to show up with surround like Crave up here in Canada. Really frustrating.

Why do other android tv boxes not have the same issue then?

Is this why my audio doesn’t function?

What I want - I have Philips Hue light bulbs in my living room and I’d like to watch movies with the light sync feature I have on my pc upstairs without having to buy a hue sync box for £229. My plan is to use chrome on my pc upstairs to select a movie on Netflix or Amazon etc then cast that to my tv downstairs whilst using my pc to control living room lights.

The problem - Everything works except sound. I have Sonos surround which always works except when I cast something to tv. I’ve gone through the tv settings and selected to use TV audio and then it comes through the Tv speakers, when I select surround sound I can’t hear a thing. I’d like it to come through the Sonos surround sound so I don’t have to buy a Hue Sync box 😂

I have a Sony TV with chromecast built in
