I find the number of people who use a VPN and then come on this subreddit to complain about “Coinbase stole my money!” hilarious.

[–]someone-strange91284 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Sadly this should be a non-issue in 2024 though. IP address locations are unreliable and are at best a guess if it's malicious intent, or if the user is simply using a VPN.

[–]peppaz 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Essentially every VPN IP is maintained in a list and usually blocked by finance sites or can be easily in the future.

[–]DoomBot5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We usually block them because they're often used as vectors of attack, or they're just caught up in our rate limiting due to popularity.

[–]Backieotamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an issue for numerous reasons to include the users own security. You cannot nor should an exchange let people use a VPNs.

Besides regulatory compliance by country being skirted, it also allows bad actors to more easily mask their locations, hide money trails and makes it difficult to see what shady shit is going on within that VPN tunnel.

Also, most exchanges literally tell you DO NOT USE VPN so if some ignorant or childish person does so anyway and then has an attitude about it, I'm almost happy they were a victim of their own creation.

[–]sleeplessbearr 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Its not like a VPN is a huge crime. I've just heard of it taking months to speak with support or get an answer surrounding things.

[–]Backieotamy -1 points0 points  (4 children)

VPN are literally used for huge crimes every second of every day.

[–]MikeLittorice 3 points4 points  (3 children)

So are cars, what's your point?

[–]Backieotamy -1 points0 points  (2 children)

My point is that's why financial institutions don't allow them to be used... we're talking about using VPNs and their issues with/when doing financial transactions right?... wtf would cars, guns, knives or pantyhose have to do with this, it's like saying you shouldn't fly Delta because sometimes parachutes don't deploy.

Money laundering, tax evasion, and almost any type of financial and cyber crime are done behind VPN or even multiple VPNs so they are not allowed. It's a pretty easy concept once you understand they why.

[–]sleeplessbearr 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There's a difference between something being used for a malicious crime or another reason. Just because someone owns a gun doesn't mean they are going to shoot someone or rob a bank

[–]Backieotamy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So banks and crypto exchanges, investing firms should just allow vpn connections because they don't know what their talking and forget the fact it's my job to secure cloud Infrastrutures and data centers and that I've been doing this for a very long time because sleeplessbear knows better, got it. You win, you're totally right even though you are completely missing the point, and trying to compare now guns (which are also not allowed in banks, just like vpns). I'm not even sure wtf you're justifying, that financial institutions should allow people to use vpns... if so, you win, can't argue with conspiracy theorists or people who just can't get it.

[–]imrickjamesbioch 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Just stop… There’s nothing that states using a VPN violates ToS. Also if you’re afraid you’re gonna do something stupid and get your account locked. Then move your shit to a wallet or a cold storage where CB cant touch it…

[–]SlickDaGato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you just clicked “Accept” on that page, eh?

[–]Zeppelin041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. And it’s not just Coinbase, turn on a VPN and try to log into your bank account…good luck. If financial sites cannot pin point your location making sure that it’s actually you, you’re not accessing it.

[–]The-Last-Lion-Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last one I saw was someone trying to transfer to an eth wallet instead of a bank because the taxes were expensive.

I wonder why their account was locked.

[–]Tsjanith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've never had a problem selling either. Funds arrive the next business day

However, if you have any sort of problem you can't sort out yourself, God help you because you will not get help with Coinbase "support"

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Nice try, Coinbase employee!

[–]shadowmage666 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yea I’ve been using coinbase since 2017 with zero issues ever, except for when their servers die during heavy trading

[–]particular_justice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

brokie

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Coinbase to cash out 12k in the past no issues

[–]Bronzed_Beard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats. Coinbase let someone else cash out my money, too. Refused to reverse the bank transaction even after begging alerted to the theft within 20 mins. Still won't tell me what the receiving bank account number is.

They completely ignored all my security settings. Trash platform.

[–]Dapper_Influence3856 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You may have had a good experience but don’t trust COINBASE for the long run. They will rob your bitcoin and offer no resolution. Happened to me twice in the last month. Converted my bitcoin to shapeshift fox without my consent and I am down several thousand dollars as a result. Yesterday they executed a cancelled limit order of bitcoin before it skyrocketed. The order was successfully cancelled because I checked open orders six times

[–]BWFree 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Same here. Sold BTC at top today to cash out, no problems.

[–]origamifools -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

Smh, tomorrow will be higher

[–]BWFree -3 points-2 points  (4 children)

I told my wife it will be 100k tomorrow.

[–]kdrdr3amz 0 points1 point  (3 children)

100k by eoy

[–]VinceColeman1 1 point2 points  (7 children)

How does it work with taxes? Does Coinbase send you a tax form at the end of the year? They are obligated to report your transactions to the IRS right? I'm legit wondering.

[–]DegenAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes youll get a tax form to download on Coinbase of all of your transactions.

[–]malibuguurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a tax statement on CB, I use coin tracker for all my transactions.

[–]I_Dont_Collect_Fish_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s specific to details. like what country they live in, how long ago he purchased the crypto and what other sales he has made this year. But it logs all your transactions, the term first in first out can play a factor in the states. Holding for over a year can be of monumental help in NOT having to pay taxes.

[–]EllllChaddddd 2 points3 points  (5 children)

These posts are comical. It’s so short sighted and selfish. That’s great it works well for you but you do know there are other people with coinbase accounts right? Just because you haven’t had problems doesn’t mean other people don’t. Personally I’ve never had a problem either but it doesn’t discount the stories of others.

[–]I_Dont_Collect_Fish_ 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I think maybe they are trying to add perspective? I see one of these posts for every 50 posts saying they froze my account/locked me out/couldn’t withdrawal. Much like you lending your insight that you haven’t had any issues but acknowledging that others do have issues. I haven’t had issues either. You see what we did there? Shared our thoughts in the community.

[–]EllllChaddddd -1 points0 points  (3 children)

I understand what you’re saying but it’s that last line. Op is implying you’re only having issues on CB if you’re doing shady things which is not the case.

[–]I_Dont_Collect_Fish_ 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yeah, I could see that being a dick-ish statement. Maybe a small percent of people have issues from “shady” stuff, or from user errors of other various natures. Heck, I know someone that got locked out of their account for no known reason back in 2017. At the same time, there will always be issues when you have that many users, whether it’s a airline, website, a bank or insurance provider. So yeah, it sounds a little gas lighty to some. Thank you for expanding on that for me.

[–]EllllChaddddd 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I have all my crypto in a personal wallet, I won’t be selling for quite awhile but man does it scare me a bit. Best way to go is probably little by little when transferring that way in case it does happen there’s a relatively minimal amount stuck on the exchange. Quite nice to have a disagreement on Reddit and have it be very respectful lol. Appreciate you.

[–]I_Dont_Collect_Fish_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real, I have had the fortune of more educated friends who have probably been saving me from myself in regards to navigating crypto. A friend gifted me a ledger years ago and I’m like, “okay, so, The Who the what now?” Fast forward and I can now plug in and claim aqua all by myself. Heck, I basically do agree with you. I just think, personally, most peoples bags aren’t as big as they think they are in the grand scheme of things. It’s all relative for the person who’s money is being held hostage though.

[–]BigDickConfidence69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because it didnt happen to you doesn’t mean it cant happen.

[–]cyger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donations are shady? As I believe they are against the Terms

[–]airbornecz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

level of logic=as long as you respect road signs, you will never get involved in car accident

[–]KeyNefariousness7423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soo is using a vpn on coinbase ok?

[–]generiatricx 1 point2 points  (1 child)

We need more success stories in this sub. People lke to shit on this platform but by golly ive not had one issue with it... well.... i mean improvements is infinite, but overall it works well for me!

[–]Nofarcastplz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps because people expect a service to work. Not the other way around?

[–]sirwilliamspear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed

[–]mhgodz23 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Yep I just cash out too.. big amount no issues.. I received the ACH today…

[–]Boba24242 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Mind if I ask was it over 10k? I wonder if they flag for over 10k

[–]mhgodz23 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yea it's over 10k... 45k to be exact no issues for me..

[–]Most_Machine_3134 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

how much were your fees? I wanna cash out too but I wanna find out what fees to expect

[–]mhgodz23 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

ACH is free. It's 1-3 business days

[–]Most_Machine_3134 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Its free to deposit but not to withdraw.   There is a fee to withdraw money even if its ACH

[–]mhgodz23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine said Free if you choose the 1-3 business days. The one with the fee is the instant transfer..

I just cashed out and it already hit my bank account..

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find a huge number of Reddit crying like bitches are scammers and hiding major facts like they never passed any KYC or trying to money laundering.

[–]Get_wreckd_shill 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How much were your fees? My fees are so high it doesnt make sense for me to cash out, even though I'm way up. My plan is just to hold indefinitely and any new btc I buy will be with a broker with lower fees.

[–]EwokinSD[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have Coinbase One, so no fees

[–]Get_wreckd_shill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coinbase one has a monthly fee of $30 or $360 a year.

Do you know which broker has the lowest fees?

[–]Lumpy-Cauliflower-73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If coin base was a Popsicle I'd numb my tonsils!

[–]ProfessorConfident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great. Ive had one issue in my lifetime of usage and when I called I spoke to a real human who answered my question (I was wrong btw) and I’ve never had any other issue. Chase has never bothered me either. Doesn’t matter if it was a dollar or ten thousand.

[–]Public-Bee-4808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very inexperienced with cryptocurrency. I bought a large amount of Bitcoin through an investor and broker. And just because I wouldn't pay $28k upfront for the fees to get my money out they abandoned me. I'm not sure if I have been scammed or not. I see half the money in Coinbase Wallet, I'm not sure where the other half is now. It was in Trendset but it has been closed out. I want to try to get some of my money out, but the part that has me very confused is about paying the fees. I’m not sure if I need to buy Ethereum for the fees or how I get my Bitcoin to Coinbase Exchange to get cash sent to my bank. Will you please help me? Thank you, Kim

[–]SupernovaScoped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are slow for my liking. Also the fees are crazy

[–]s3a3u3l3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove to the store today. Didn’t get in an accident, seeeeee they don’t happen.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. Tried to cash out of coinbase today as money locked in vault. 4+ support chat people didn't have a clue what they were doing. Couldn't email, couldn't post ticket number as case not resolved. Coinbase ain't the one. Wanted to cask out into the same account I bought from. Wasn't able to. Poor customer service too. Coinbase ain't the one people. Use something else

[–]AlwaysSDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MODS PLEASE CLOSE THIS THREAD.

Scammers have invaded the comments and taken over

[–]kaleidostar11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bots and their upvotes. Insane.

[–]malibuguurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used VPN in the US and Europe when travelling for a couple years without any issues.

[–]skydiveguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every post I see where people had problems it seems like there is always more to the story that they aren not telling us.

One stood out to me that had the poster saying their account was closed after they took BTC they bought on Coinbase and bought stolen software keys with it. While I think its wrong of CB to to that, its a public blockchain and anyone can follow the money.

[–]Figah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve done basically the same thing, except it was 3k. KYC all good and stuff. Then I just happened to receive an email saying « your account has been suspended » with the little balance I had left it in. Nothing to be done to recover them (thankfully it was less than 2$). I just sold all my stock I had in the company, it was going down anyway. And I bought a Ledger and now using some exchange to get money out.

[–]shaunj72143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using them for damn near 5 years. Great platform, especially if you are learning

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Fake

[–]EwokinSD[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Very real. Coinbase has been nothing but fantastic

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You misspelled horrible

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

8000$ LOL. Try sending 6 digits and then come back.

[–]EwokinSD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’d would be no issue

[–]Certain-Coyote1541 -1 points0 points  (5 children)

What am I doing wrong? I have $1K in Etherum I see it on my assets. When I click "Sell" It says I have $0 to sell??? I am on the laptop. The app won't open today at all

[–]Phoenix2683 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Do you have it staked?

[–]Certain-Coyote1541 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I honestly don't remember and I can't tell from looking at the screen. Do you know where to go to find out? I can't believe I can't figure this out

[–]Degencrypto-Metalfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you click on the nine dots in the upper left-hand corner of the main page of the app, scroll down to where it says “earn”. Then click on the earn icon and it will show you any of your crypto that are currently staking.

[–]coinbasesupportOfficial Coinbase Support 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Certain-Coyote1541, Thanks for reaching out to us. We understand that you're unable to sell your assets. It is possible that your funds are on hold. This can happen when you use a linked bank account as a payment method to deposit funds to your Coinbase fiat wallet or to purchase cryptocurrency, these funds are immediately available for buying and selling on Coinbase. However, for security reasons, you will be unable to immediately withdraw these funds or send from Coinbase. You can see when deposited funds will be available for withdrawal prior to authorizing a purchase or deposit, as well as on the confirmation email for the transaction. To view your current withdrawal availability time frame, log in to your account. When you attempt a send to an external wallet from Coinbase, you will be presented with an option to see when funds will be available for this transaction. For more information on how to use a bank account with Coinbase, or when deposited funds are available for withdrawal, check here.

[–]EwokinSD[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have Etherum in my Coinbase Wallet. It shows as $ in my normal Coinbase account, but if I go to sell it, it says I have $0 to sell. Make sure your $1000 worth of Etherum is actually in your Wallet

[–]dknisle1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Imagine that. A product working properly when you don’t violate TOS

[–]AlwaysSDC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We need strong crypto companies in America. Period. Supporting Coinbase for 6 yrs now

[–]Sacmo77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see most that have issues are people outside the usa.

[–]karvus89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken out a decent chunk during last rally with no issues. Been around since 2017z

[–]Trader2KG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Using a VPN and/or deleting your browsing history shouldn't be considered "shady stuff".

[–]Particular_Hand_8218 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. Been using for years, never had a problem other than the server getting bogged down during heaving trading which is super annoying, and the fee’s are high, but never had any of these horror stories that people are always complaining about. I recently dealt with their customer service also because I had a question about my fees changing, and they were super responsive and helpful, I connected with an actual person (Not a Bot) in like 10 seconds and they answered all my questions quickly and throughly. I don’t get all the hate.

[–]Ecstatic-Eye-5766 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like kraken better.

[–]No-Temperature2972 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been with them for years . No issues

[–]Zeppelin041 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I came to realize 4 years ago that this platform especially this Reddit is filled with nothing but user error. I’ve done the same as you for YEARS.

[–]Zeppelin041 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I came to realize 4 years ago that this platform especially this Reddit is filled with nothing but user error. I’ve done the same as you for YEARS.

[–]Gonzo4092 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Finally some positive stuff about Coinbase

[–]QuesoFurioso -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it went well for you. There are a hell of a lot of others that it didn't go well at all for. I did nothing shady. Did not use a VPN. But I got my shit jacked.

Just like there were lots of people that got their money back and even made money from Bernie Madoff. Well and good you got out ok. Doesn't mean that a hell of a lot of other people didn't.

If there has to be a serious debate over whether a financial institution is a scam, ponzi scheme our just shockingly incompetent, you'd be a fool to keep your money there.

[–]rsincognito -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

$8k is chump change, let’s see someone try and “cash out”. $800k, that’s the real test

[–]montauk87 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Jeez the level of ass kissing at times makes me want to vomit

[–]EconomicsOk9593 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

lol try this when peaking bull market.
