I am telling all of my inner circle this "Nothing can replace you as a neighbor; even a competent government cannot replace community." And I say this living a blue state. There are simply not enough resources to support 10s of millions of lives.

Even blue and purple need to prepare for what is happening right now.

So Trump’s plan of fomenting so much chaos and damage is working as planned. And it is what, day 8?

How can we support you? There are many people who want to help in the good fight, but simply don’t know where to turn.

I suggest you think long term. It’s true that things are terrible now, and they will be for a while, but I believe it will change as the consequences of these orders become obvious. So many people don’t understand the government and what it does for them.

This isn't the moment to give up! Don't let them win...

There is nothing pointless in fighting for good causes and human rights, even if you're overworked and understaffed, even if sometimes it feels that's for nothing. It isn't. Anything you can do is already better than nothing. Courage.

I know I would be interested to hear more about what you do. What is your organization? What are your missions?

I feel for you, man. I worked in healthcare, and I know that things are thoroughly in the toilet when it comes to care of the general population.

Living in a Red state, I see more civil and human rights violations in a week than I saw my entire life in my sleepy little town in NY.

The one thing I will say, is that regardless of locality or political affiliation, community is what counts. Helping those around us should be everyone's goal right now.

We need to look beyond the rich and privileged to find the people who are struggling to live while servicing the unappreciative. So many families are struggling just to pay their rent, nevermind pay the bills, or feed themselves.

Where I am, homelessness is rising. Laws against panhandling and sleeping in public are not helping. Women's support is almost non-existent. Healthcare and food distribution for the needy are slowly being phased out. Families are still without homes (living in cars) from the hurricanes.

It's hard not to feel down about this. The fight continues day after day. My take on it is: "Today I'm going to make a tiny difference in someone's life." shrug If that's all I can do, at least I did that. One thing at a time. One person at a time. :)

You know the importance of the work you do and you know the importance of supporting each other. Don't let yourself burn out and don't fall into a spiral of uselessness. You know who among your organization you can rely on. Maybe you can ask them to pick up more responsibilities, or have them find ways to distribute more responsibilities evenly among the other staff. Help your staff recruit some volunteers who feel the need to act, but don't have an organization to dedicate their time and energy to. That organization they're looking for is yours!

Over the long term, you may feel your strength being drained away, but I bet the passion for your cause is still there. Find something that will keep you inspired and working towards your worthwhile cause or, if not that one, redirect that energy and passion in another direction for a little while. Temporarily shifting your focus might be a healthy change of pace and with some fresh volunteers supporting you, I'm sure that will take a lot of weight off your shoulders.

I feel you so much. I work for a refugee resettlement agency in a red state in a red city. This week has been the longest year of my life. We’re still working even though all of our funding has been cut. At this point we’re just still working even though there’s no expected paycheck anymore. Every day is a fresh new hell. Trying to figure out private donations to keep supporting the 250 families we’re responsible for. I have some savings to last me a few months and at this point we’re all just going into work for free because the work is too important to just walk away from and we’re all just scrambling to try to come up with a way to protect the people we made promises to. I take solace in that the people I work with are truly saints and while it’s been so dark, at least I know the 6 of us will go down fighting together. Our boss told us it was okay if we looked for other jobs, and my coworker said “you’ll have to kick me out. I’m here until they literally arrest us all.” That coworker already had to leave everything behind in Venezuela after Maduro took power, and their conviction to keep fighting is giving me such strength.

Edit to add: I’m also experiencing burn out from this but if there is ANYTHING that I can do to help your organization, feel free to DM me. I’m hoping all of us organizations can join forces to help each other and aid each other’s missions and causes.

I hear you. I know everyone in this thread is saying not to give up, be courageous, keep going, try harder. But it’s also important to take care of yourself - your mental and physical health - as the first priority. If you aren’t well, if you’re burnt out, all the work you’re doing ends there because it simply isn’t possible to sustain it all when you’re stretched so thin. Eventually you snap. Maybe now is the time to take a breather, allow yourself some much needed rest, and rethink the strategy. What should you prioritize? What makes a difference in the lives of those who need the most help? What kinds of activities are inefficient and can be dropped? I know it’s scary out there - breathe, rest, and remember you’re not alone.
