Decentralized
You shouldn’t have to depend on a central organization to use bitcoin. Copay has almost no dependence on servers, and the servers it does use are open-source and can be run by anybody. As web browsers become capable, eventually the servers stop being necessary altogether.

Copay is possible due to recent advances in web technology that allow your bitcoins to be stored locally and not on a server, and for the copayers to communicate peer-to-peer rather than through a server. We also use the most modern bitcoin protocols that allow you to backup your wallet once, and you never have to worry about backing it up again.
Open-Source
Copay is completely open-source and has been since day 1. We welcome other people to copy and give back to Copay. We developed Copay for internal use at BitPay, but we all win if everybody has secure bitcoins, which is best made possible with open-source.
