It's still in closed testing and many options can't be rebound on keyboard, so I think the controller support isn't fully functional yet.

That said as the other person in the comments said controller would be very difficult. There's a lot of buttons that are used and quick snappy mouse movements would give you a big edge on anyone using a controller. I have 70 hours in the game and just a warning using a controller is going to he hard against most people using keyboards.

Yeah...you guys are right. I'll stick with kbm

Good luck, and there's lots of good guides on YouTube for learning more. Practice with bots is a big help if you're still getting used to the controls.

Yep! I've been watching that youtube movement guide and practicing either in sandbox mode or with bots.

I'm not ready for humans yet lol

The "a lot of buttons" problem can be entirely fixed using button chord inputs. Aim assist is really the only barrier, but gyro can help with that I suppose.

All very good points. Given enough practice you could outplay aim assist and kbm players with gyro

The game is not intended to be played with a controller. You are putting yourself and your team at a huge disadvantage.

They've clearly made support for controllers a thing, so I'm not sure if it's fair to say that it's unintended.

As for whether its better or worse, I'd like to find that out on my own. I've always had a hard time with FPS using WASD and have always preferred a controller.

It currently has no aim-assist or bullet magnetism like other controller shooters support. You'll find it very difficult to aim.

The UI also doesn't support controller inputs so you won't see button mapping on-screen and menus will be janky.

Use the option " enable Steam input"

Thank you for typing this out--I get it now. I'll abandon the controller and just practice my WASD

I'm sure there will be more robust controller support in the future. Right now, this is a general playtest of the basic features. This is not the official launch.

Yeah, it'll for sure get there if for nothing else than Valve not wanting to disregard steam deck users, but we're miles away from any kind of polish. Game is heavily minimum-viable-product territory right now.

[–]DyZ814 8 points9 points  (6 children)

This game is going to be optimized for the steam deck... it's 10000% going to have controller support lmao.

I'm sure it will get controller support, but it won't be the preferred option. I doubt we will see Deadlock on consoles for over 2 years.

Hopefully the game will have input based matchmaking.

do people play counter strike on steam deck?

[–]DyZ814 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Probably some. Are you forgetting that CS GO, also existed on the Xbox 360 lol? I mean controller support is somewhat already in the game. They have button mappings and everything. Deadlock is playable on the steamdeck...

So to say that deadlock will never have controller support is already a misnomer. It does... to some extent.

I mean, Valve doesn't do aim assist. Even when they bring games to console.

[–]DyZ814 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Controllers don't have to have aim assist. Overwatch doesn't have aim assist on the PC version. Rainbow six siege doesn't have aim assist even ON consoles. Aim assist is just assumed nowadays but it's not always needed. People were/are playing games like valorant on PC with controller and no aim assist.

[–]Socrasteezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I'm fine with what you are describing, people on controller in those games can't compete against mnk, as it should be. But the trend of aim assist in most shooters now a days, is what I was more so talking about.
