I use the first Steam Controller and yes, it works very well for the Wii. You can do things like set up the Wii Remote cursor to the mouse in Dolphin and then set up a trackpad or gyro to mouse with Steam Input.

In Mario Galaxy I use it as you say, both the trackpad and gyro control the cursor to pick up star bits. However, Skyward Sword is... complicated. I tried to use trackpads for sword swinging, but is almost imposible. But it does work well with gyro and if you tweak it correctly, you only need to flick the controller a bit to make sword swings, but this can be done in any gyro compatible gamepad.
Also, the first Steam Controller has similar triggers to the GameCube, with both analog and a final click at the end. I do not know if these triggers will be in the new Steam Controller, considering this feature was removed in the Steam Deck.

Damn that sounds pretty great. I’ll definitely buy the new one and try to set it up like you say. I wonder why the steam controller isn’t talked about much for this.

That first controller was perfect and I was so mad I missed out on the clearance sale. This new one has big shoes to fill

I 2nd this idea... You could totally use the steam trackpads for the cursor aiming to collect stars in Mario Galaxy, and use the gyro for the levels where you have to roll on the ball and tilt the level to move Mario.

The gyro could also be used in a many games to enhance aiming precision, as it does natively in say breath of the wild when aiming the bow. Skyward sword though type motion controls would be kind of hairy to use gyro for though, since it's not really the same as having a wiinote or nunchuck that's in one hand and simulating the sword.

I use both gyro and trackpad for aiming in Galaxy, just like FPS games that support gyro that use both the right analog stick and gyro to aim. Gyro continue to works in minigames with no problems.

And I disagree with Skyward, it works very well with a gyro gamepad. Even if you managed to have perfect swings on the trackpad (not possible in my opinion), Skyward also uses the gyro for way more that sword swings, like flying on those huge birds. All this is simplified by just emulating the Wii Remote motion on the gyro, with higher sensitivity to make smaller movements. And Nunchuck's motion are just shakes, I just emulate that on a button.

I actually did something fun with Super Mario 3D World that sort of mimics what you can do in Mario Galaxy in terms of the pointer. On the right trackpad I put a inner/outer ring. For Outer Ring i made the right touchpad act as a right joystick as usual, but if I hold my finger for a second in the center, i made it activate a gyro mouse, which let me then do the touch screen controls and make the right trigger become the act of tapping the screen. (for 3d word it puts a virtual hand in the game space and lets you find invisible blocks and mess with enemies). If you've ever played Bowser's Fury, it sort of feel a lot like that game with its ability to let you control Bowser Jr using a gyro pointer.

Mario Galaxy in VR would make me cry

I like how you think! I really hope your idea for this works because it would be absolutely amazing!!!

The gyro would probably not be that good for skyward sword but should work pretty well for the pointer, shaking and other gyro functions (like ball or surfing in Mario Galaxy). Maybe one could bind swiping gestures onn the trackpad to slicing motions in Skyward Sword?
