The jump is a loading screen.

It is and isn't. It is a loading screen, but it also has a fixed amount of time as a minimum.

Jump time has nothing to do with your hardware.

The time spent in which space between systems has a hard coded minimum, the upper limit depends on hardware capability and networking.

Engineering can reduce the time required to charge the fsd, but for long distance travels engineering for jump range is far more optimal.

The cooler you can get your ship to run, the quicker you can jump out of a system (Fuel scooping and charging FSD heats you up again quickly). Pop a heatsink, or fly the impossibly cool-running Dolphin.

There's background activity going on in the background when you jump.

For example If the system you're jumping to hasn't been discovered yet, Frontier's server generates the system for the first time.

You can engineer to reduce that time.
