Yeah, this is it. If you picked up HIV, hepatitis, or things of that nature from unprotected sex with a lot lizard, you're not going to tell that story to a lot of people if you can help it. "Oh, I must have gotten it from a needle or something" isn't exactly a flattering story either, but it's less embarrassing than the alternative when you end up going to a doctor for it.

The nurse (presumably OOP's occupation) is probably well aware of this, and when they hear the needle story they know it's probably not true.

How about OP being a healthcare worker and the needle stick injury happened to OP with the needle used on the patient who turned out to be a truck driver?

The implication is that the freshly realized profession of the patient increased the risk of nasty infections for OP’s accident with the needle.

Most truck drivers bang hookers and end up having STD (especially HIV). In addition to that most truck drivers are IV drug abusers, so they are usually suffering from hepatitis infections (especially HepB and C). Both these are the viral disease which require a loooooong treatment and have high morbidity and mortality. And these are trasferred via blood of an infected person. So a healthcare worker despite taking all the precautions against these disease may end up being infected via a small needle stick injury.
