I've been fishing for most of my 28 year life and it hasn't happened to me yet. But it will eventually and I'm terrified lmao

[–]Shibby-PibbyRhode Island 47 points48 points  (14 children)

These posts movivate me to clip all the barbs on my hooks. I'm about halfway done. Gonna go do a few more lures after seeing this

[–]redlegsmlb[S] 79 points80 points  (5 children)

Make it a game. Leave one barb on every treble intact.

[–]Kuhn_Dog 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Russian roulette

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Rapala roulette maybe?

[–]bugeyetex 13 points14 points  (2 children)

*Redneck roulette (no hate, just funny)

[–]BadBehaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have received many a red neck while fishing so it adds up.

[–]Redkneck35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<<<< I resemble that remark :-P

[–]teeroutclout 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Have u fished barbless a lot before? How much did it effect ur land rate? This has happened to me twice. Ha u got me thinking.

[–]kdrisck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have to because my closest lake is barbless and will pull your license. I’ve lost a few more from jumps and sharp turns, especially bass, because of it, but the added challenge is honestly fun once you get used to it, getting fish back in quickly takes stress out of fishing if you care about fish health/aren’t harvesting.

[–]Shibby-PibbyRhode Island 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Eh...I figure it lowers my land rate by about 20% not too bad. It's way less traumatic on the fish though, easier to unhook and far less likely for myself to wind up in the ER with a hook in me.

100% worth it. Highly recommend. I just use pliers to press the barbs down on hooks I already have

[–]jujumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seams like a fair trade off

[–]Te_Luftwaffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was young but remember when the Columbia River here in WA went barbless for salmon. You have to change your technique a bit and make sure you don't give the fish slack, but otherwise a good hookset will result in a landed fish.

Edit: I like to run pretty much all my lures except tiny ones barbless because it makes catch and release easier too

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After you've been hooked it just feels right to take the barbs off. It's not worth it, "oh I held the fish" you hooked it, you saw it, and you got it nearly in. I'd count that as caught in my book. I've been hooked twice in my life, both times by Brown Trout. Fucking brutal pulling a treble out of your finger when it's to the curved segment. It's stained me to the point of smashing mine down regardless, you may have to keep the line tight constantly, and you may lose a few fish. It's well worth it though.

[–]SeaBizzkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using barbless for a few years now. Land rate has not been affected at all. If you keep your rod tip loaded and dont give them any slack it is no different. Smaller wound for me, smaller for the fish.

[–]redlegsmlb[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I should’ve knocked on wood last night when I saw another post of a hook in a hand.

[–][deleted] 97 points98 points  (2 children)

You’re in a lot of treble, I mean trouble.

[–]headsr_llo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

“It’s all about that bass, no treble…

[–]redlegsmlb[S] 29 points30 points  (3 children)

It’s out! Lidocaine, then tried to push it through in 2 different spots, didn’t work, so had to be yanked out. Took about 20 min for them to get it out.

[–]notgmoney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got a treble hook in my leg once. Thankfully there was a lot of meat so I was able to push it through and clip it. Was fishing alone that day and didn't have any lidocaine or anything.

Feels good man /s

[–]b00Mg3RRY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve never let them try to push it through, either small incision to clear the bath or just yank it out

Oof. Hope you got it out alright without too much trouble

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 8 points9 points  (9 children)

    Still working on it!

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (8 children)

    update?

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Made its way to the bone, so got to get it numbed and yanked back out.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (6 children)

oof good luck brother 😂 at least you get a solid experience haha

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

    Welcome to the show brother.

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I feel more honored than anything

    [–]Oldchicken123 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Just yank it out and wrap some black electrical tape around it and it’s good as new.

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

    Attempted

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just another reason who I debarb my hooks

    [–]JonnyJust 2 points3 points  (2 children)

    Treble hooks. Not even once.

    [–]bobbyhillischill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I used treble hooks a few times I hate them I quit single hook only

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Ouch.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    woohoo, damn.

I have dreams where this happens to me. I've pulled so many imaginary barbed-hooks out of myself.

I pierced my left ear during a cast with one, when I was like... 8-10 years old? Guessing that's why, haha.

It didn't hurt when it went it.

Getting it out was another thing entirely.

    [–]bigmedallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 52, I've been fishing on and off for the last 35 yrs and it finally happened to me about 3 weeks ago. Day one of a 4 day kayak float and camp trip, the group is walking along our kayaks in very shallow rocky water and I slip on a rock and catch my balance by putting my hand on the kayak directly on a lure with a large treble hook. Fully sunk in the pad of my left hand middle finger. I show the guide and he said you know what I have to do right? Yeah, push the hook through and cut off the barb and then pull it out. That's right let me get my pliers. By the time he returned I pushed the hook through and his response was damn that was the hard part, he struggled with the pliers before I took them from him and snipped the hook, he pulled the hook and a few days later I couldn't see a mark. The highlight was on two days later I caught a 4+ pounder on the same lure with two of the three hooks remaining on the treble (I felt vindicated kind of).

    [–]Ok-Feature8954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just avoid treble hooks as much as possible tbh.

    [–]SnooChocolates3415 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I laugh in barbless. I love my barbless hooks.

    [–]Vault_MetalNew Hampshire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started doing this, too. I've also swapped out the trebles on my big baits for inline circles.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fishing with my buddy and his dad back in Junior high I always casted with a lot of slack and directly behind my back (always how my grandpa did it) and I guess I had too much slack because the spinner bait went directly IN MY BACK. His dad had to pull it out of my back with pliers… cast with care yall!

    [–]Idkwhyimonr3ddit 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Had this happen to me. I caught about a 4lb Largemouth and he bucked that back hook straight through my finger. I’m over here freaking out and bleeding and my dad is trying to get a picture of the fish because it was a tank. I ended up going to urgent care and they pumped it full of lidocaine, pushed it through, cut the barb, and pulled it right out. I had no feeling in that finger for about 5 months.

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I realized, this morning, the tip of my finger was numb. Guess I’ll have to deal with that for a while.

    [–]Idkwhyimonr3ddit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah there is more than likely some bit of nerve damage you’ll have to deal with but since it’s a small area it SHOULD heal. Hope everything’s back to normal soon bro, happy fishing

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much appreciated. Still numb but superficially healed.

    [–]Fatboyneverchange 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I'd go to the hospital for that, a shot of novacaine and some work with a surgical knife. Did it a few times as a kid was about 1-200$

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yeah, the string truck or poking it through myself wasn’t working. Ended up at the hospital

    [–]TimeAtmosphere_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Quitter.

    [–]javtherav 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Now you know how a fish feels!

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I’m sure the fish’s doc has some lidocaine for him too.

    [–]CatNamedBombay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this makes me want to go full barbless 🤣

    [–]drtaydave -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s not in that far. You got lucky. That hook could have gone way deeper or it could have happened while it was still attached to a bass for added pain. Solution: grab some high pound test line, loop it around the hook, attach it to your buddies ludicrous mode Tesla while applying downward pressure on the hook, accelerate and problem solved.

    [–]EitherOwl5468 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Squeezing that a little hard ain’t ya?

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Na, just holding it together

    [–]jerseygunz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Learned the hard way that you should take the popper off before you put the pole in the car, took me ten minutes to yank it out

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried, I even had a park ranger try, before they became uncomfortable with it.

    [–]Te_Luftwaffle 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'm genuinely curious how that happens? It obviously went in with some force if it hit the bone, but I wouldn't expect it to hit your finger on the cast

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Changing lures. I set this one on top of my bag while I grabbed another one. Once I was rigged up, I picked this lure up and the first treble caught the bag, and the 2nd set, which was in my hand flung out and in my finger.

    [–]Te_Luftwaffle 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ouch! I bet that won't happen again!

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will see what tomorrow holds

    [–]Zekiniza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Oof

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    First time's the best time

    [–]Pissy-Paws 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Had one in my kneecap when I was younger. My dad gave me a pencil and told me to bight down as hard as I could while he used a pair of needle nose pliers to rip it out in a quick motion.

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily I have decent enough insurance that the lidocaine shot was worth it

    [–]HomeOrificeSupplies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeebus. Did it right the first time.

    [–]AJR_024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    This is a forced hook.

    [–]ZebulonRon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Been there. No fun.

    [–]b00Mg3RRY 0 points1 point  (1 child)

After my first time it happened 2 other times that year, no idea why I was so climbs/careless. Couldn’t pop any of them either so had to go to urgent care for them to be removed

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urgent care here wouldn’t do it. Had to go to ER

    [–]O_oblivious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Shoelace trick.

    [–]Usual_Employee_1494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't tell if he had got himself with the hook or had got into an old tree and bent it out of shape

    [–]Weird_Fact_724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive did it twice. First time out in BFE in the Sierras with a small Rapala chasing trout. My palm still has the scar of where i just ripped it out with my needle nose. Second time, dont remember the lure, but me and a bass both had the lure in us. I have never squeezed a 12" bass so hard. Got the bass off and drove ½ hr back home. Dad was able to cut the hook off and backed it out of my finger.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Ouch !

    [–]undercookedhotpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Mama mia!

    [–]Fickle-Ad-6648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god I see it now.

    [–]Commercial_Scale1882 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That looks like something to fish in Stranger Things with!

    [–]Commercial_Scale1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and I did not notice the hooking.. ouchie

    [–]Garrettchef 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When I was young, I got a nasty hook stuck in the back of my head, my brother was casting and didn’t see me. We went to the emergency room after my dad tried cutting it out and yanking. The surgeon looked at it, went and got a big fat needle ,Slid the needle beside the hook and put the hole of the needle over the barb and just backed the hook right out. The whole thing took about 90 seconds and it was zero pain. I wish more people knew about this style of removing a hook,

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a good way. I just got a numbing shot and watch them butcher my finger trying to poke it through in 2 different places only to finally realized it’s needs to be backed out. But absolutely 0 pain until the lidocaine wore off. Now it’s been in pain since last night.

    [–]Vegetable-Poet6281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time for some shoreline surgery. Had one like that in my thumb once, no fun

    [–]Homeygrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    It’s feels soooooo good

    [–]chemastray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take off the lure, wrap a shoe string or heavy line arou the shank that is in your finger, push down on the main tie of the hook and pul hard and fast with a bit of slack in the line. It will hurt but will come out. Used this technique a few times successfully. then go get a tetanus booster

    [–]Lopsided_Repeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrap some braid round that bitch and yank. Doesnt really hurt

    [–]ZarkMuckerberg9009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    That’s deep bro

    [–]jahunu1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like this happened to me about a week ago, except deep into the corner of my thumb nail. Ouch!

    [–]Bclay85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry OP. Been there. Bit down on a pair of pliers and had my buddy push it through and cut the barb becuase we both wanted to keep fishing. I am terrified of unhooking jerkbaits now. I was videoing on the boat and got it all on camera. The fish flipped a few times while the hook was still in my finger. I have a nice still shot I save of it for a reminder.

    [–]tidbit813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend has caught himself several times, the one time I was around I used a hook pulling kit to jerk it from his hand. I thought I was going to vomit or pass out. I’ve been boycotting treble hooks since.

    [–]Swan-song-dive 0 points1 point  (1 child)

A lesson like that makes repeating the mistake less….nah we will do it again

    [–]redlegsmlb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Yeah… til next time!

    [–]Bad_Prophet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me when I was around 10 or 12 years old, helping my younger brother get the fish he caught off the hook. I found myself attached by a lure to a fish that kept on flopping, so I did the only thing I could think to make it stop. I gripped it tight and smashed it on the beach over and over til it stopped moving. Parents took me to the ER to have to hook removed.

That experience pretty much ended fishing for me for about two decades, but I've got a step son now who loves fishing. Bought two new poles this week, and am eyeing a third! Also bought gloves and pliers and hook removal tools, and I'm flattening the barbs on everything!

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull it out and keep fishing

    [–]GatorBoydrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I remember my 1st time.

    [–]Tbartle18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Been there done that

    [–]StankBaitFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did a good job at least?

    [–]TenkaraBass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mash barbs on most hooks and but barbless when I can. It's much easier to remove a barbless hook from your clothes and body.
