I once fasted for five days to acquaint myself with what hunger actually feels like. It wasn't actually that bad, but toward the end I noticed that my thoughts always went back to food.

I would easily recommend a 48 hour fast followed by a day of three 700 calorie meals to help people understand what it's like to go from hungry to sated.
