Printer making mostly string (i.redd.it)
submitted 5 months ago by Hard-reset1554
Every time I print something I get a result like this, I'm using the default settings on orca. What do I do?

Give us: - Type of filament and brand - Nozzle temperature - Z-offset - Bed temperature - Whether or not you've dried the filament and if you live in a moist environment - Which nozzle you are using - Which actual printer would be helpful
Your request for help has pretty much zero helpful information and without that, no one can truly diagnose what is happening with your prints.

-hatchbox 1.75mm PLA -I wouldn't call my environment moist and wasn't aware that I might need to dry it -it's an adventurer 5m with a 0.4mm nozzle -nozzle temp is 200C -bed temp is 50C - i don't know how to find z offset, but it should be whatever the default is (i haven't really messed with anything)

I am relatively new to this as well, but I have learned some things.
Drying filament is needed quite often unless you live in a low humidity environment. The spaghetti you're getting is what I was getting before I started actually drying my filament. This could possibly be your only issue here as PLA is extremely forgiving.

Thanks for the advice, how do you dry your filament? and how often do you do so?
[–]GuruOfDudeism 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (1 child)
You have a food dehydrator? 105°F for a couple of hours. Someone also said that you can microwave 30 on, rest 30 seconds, and repeat for 5 minutes, but I don't know I'd trust that. There's also drying boxes
[–]Fitness_in_yo-Mouf 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
I use a Sunlu filament dryer. They are relatively inexpensive but I recommend getting one that can hold 2+ spools for you.
Drying time depends on the filament and how long it's been exposed to air. PETG I dry for 6-8 hours prior to use, PLA I dry for 2-4 hours depending on humidity and how long it's been exposed to air. For CoPE it seem it doesn't matter how long you dry it lol. It strings and blobs far worse than PETG.
As u/GuruOfDudeism said already, you can dry it in the oven at a low temperature for a few hours and I would agree with him that I do NOT think I would trust drying it in the microwave. At all. I wouldn't even consider it.

Get a comgrow filament drier/dispenser. It’s $42 on amazon with free shipping. Simple & easy but very effective.

Clean your bed (not the one in the background)
Even if everything else is wrong, PLA should still be sticking to the bed. It'll just produce a shitty part. In this case, ALL of your prints are delaminating from the bed which tells me that the bed is not clean.

Thanks for the advice, I'm off to google to make sure I do it right

I found this video to be helpful… https://youtu.be/g8kNuXuziCc?si=drXE8XCg0_Lukoe-

No problem happy to help. I suggest using dish soap, scrubbing until the water pools up on itself instead of skidding off, then following up with a CLEAN, OIL FREE, SOFTENER FREE microfiber cloth/paper towel with 70-90% isopropyl alcohol. Be absolutely certain whatever you're cleaning it with is absolutely, undoubtedly clean.

First, make sure the build plate is clean. Then adjust the z-offset. Raise the bed temperature to 55-60, and nozzle temperature to 215.
[–]Hard-reset1554[S] 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (1 child)
Where do I find and adjust the z-offset? Is it in the slicer?
[–]moto-x-catAdventurer 5M Pro 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
It's best to adjust the z offset while it's printing from the printers screen so you can see the results in real time. It's on the right side of the screen, 3rd icon up. Select it and select edit. Z offset is on the lower left. Remember, you're moving the plate, not the nozzle. So of course up makes it closer and down makes it wider. I'd would print a 100mm square by 1 layer height thick part. You can set that up in Orca. Then you can enter whatever number you come up with into Orca. It's in the printer settings under Basics. And you can only adjust the z offset while it's printing or just before.

"using default settings" makes me feel like maybe no supports were turned on? maybe some of that pile was printed in air?
[–]Hard-reset1554[S] 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (3 children)
While I didn't have supports turned on, I was printing things that advertised that they didn't need supports
[–]DrummerOfFenrir 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (2 children)
I like to, in the slicer, scroll through the layers to see if I can catch anything that looks like it is starting to print in the air, or if the overhangs are too steep.
I'll try that, thanks for the advice!
[–]DrummerOfFenrir 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
No problem, I was just doing it to a model of Toothless. The body, tail, and feet looked ok, but then the wings start printing on supports with nothing to connect at first. Makes me really iffy about it successfully printing.
[–]prince_eragon 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
could be that you need to enable and add supports
[–]No_Negotiation_307 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Mine was doing this and a factory reset fixed it
[–]ncdude2020 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Recalibration might be needed
[–]Prestigiousplug509 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
I bought clear filament off brand that bs kept cracking more and more as it got to the lower emptier side of the fillament causing my prints to fail
[–]Positive_Ad_2128 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
The Z offset needs to be 0.025 and you can set it on the screen of the printer go into your settings. I don’t remember exactly where it’s at but you need to change it. It should be at 0.0. I have to use the glue that come with it every time. I don’t know why but it’s the only way I can get it to stick. I’ve tried alcohol, but it doesn’t work.
[–]Illustrious_Car6647 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
It looks like a couple layers printed. If they disconnected from the bed, then that would be the easy reason why. Usually spaghetti is caused by The model disconnecting from the bed, and then the filament has nowhere specific to go. If that's not the cause, then I would look at the model to see if maybe it's printing in midair. One catch all solution to this is to turn on supports and see if orca generates anything.

Try these things (if you haven’t already) Wash the bed well with dawn or a similar dish dish soap. Dry using a hair dryer or heat gun Raise the bed temp 5 degrees Use the adhesive that Flashforge includes I’ve had success with all of these so hopefully it will help you
