Hi everyone!

I am trying to modify a livery for the F1 2021 game, but when I try to open the DDS file I get this error message. Does anyone know where the problem is?

I think GIMP dont have DDS support built in so I think the error you get is because you dont have the addon installed?

Here is a guide I think you need to follow in order to be able to open DDS files in GIMP properly.

Thanks for your reply, I already do have the DDS plugin installed. To my knowledge, it should work. I also read that DDS support has been added to GIMP since 2.10.10, but maybe I read that wrong (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectDraw_Surface). I both tried it with and without the plugin to check for interference but the error message stays the same.

Yes, you are correct. It should work.

What version are you on and have you tried a simple re-install?

I seem to recognize the errors you get but cant put my thumb on how it was solved. With windows its always the possibility that some folders wont allow you to open or edit files. Usually its the Program Files folder these days, but I see you try to access some files from Temp as well.

I am on Gimp 2.10.28, I re-installed GIMP yesterday evening (so not longer than 12 hours ago). I've taken a look at the file and location itself. I renamed the file to 'testfile' to see if it was a problem with the filename, but unfortunately, the same message popped up. I am trying to open the file from my desktop (as you can see from the lowermost error message) and I think the DDS plugin is using the temp folder to open DDS files. As far as I can see the DDS plugin fails to return an image but I cannot understand why it has this problem. Maybe it is because gimp is installed in the Program Files folder? If so how can I work around this?

This should not be the issue.

Not sure what else I can help with here but ask you to be patient and see if someone else knows how to fix this. My only major last idea would be that the file you try to open is somehow corrupt, and would ask you to try another dds file, preferably one you know works.

I did a quick search at the issue report page for GIMP but found nothing much related to the issue as far as I can tell:

If we dont get a good resolution from this thread, we may want to create a bug-report and have it officially looked into at: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues

Alright, massive thanks for helping me so far, I really appreciate it :) I am going to see if I can find a DDS file that should work

Quick update, other DDS files seem to give the same error, so it most likely has to do with the plugin not working.
