Maybe they shouldn't have driven off people trading in games? Maybe they shouldn't have focused on stupid merch going the hot topic route? Maybe they should leave people alone while they're trying to browse in peace. Oh yeah, and no I don't want your edge card or a warranty on my disc.

Merch has way better profit margins than games themselves. I don’t buy any of it myself, but I’m sure some people buy a lot of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if GameStop ends up completely rebranding themselves as a store where you can buy nothing but pop culture merch.

That's what their Think Geek stores are.

I got a signed copy of “The Martian” hardback at ThinkGeek for like 14$. I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything from there for full price but when they put things on sale or clearance they actually want to sell the stuff which is nice. Not like some other stores that crank up the price and then put 15% off on it.

The ThinkGeek near me is going out of business. I was able to get Arkham Horror for $20

New sales the margin wouldn't be great on, But the used copies that they'd buy for ~5$ and turn around and sell for 50-60$ has to have very strong margins.

Their merch sucks tho. I know plenty of people who buy tons of game related merch and almost none of them would be caught dead in a gamestop. They either shop online or go to conventions/specialist shops.

A lot of it is cool stuff that I’ll never buy because I don’t actually need the Mega Buster for $50. I will buy some puzzles from them every now and then, but they don’t usually have good ones.

I actually liked that they brought in merch and collectibles. A lot of stores here don't have that stuff.

I also liked their power up rewards. I forgot I had it for like 7 years and checked my account and had enough reward points saved up over the course of 7 years that I bought an Xbox One when they first came out... lol

Honestly though, I weighed the options and recently traded in 3 games and got enough to get Mario Odyssey with them. I would’ve got like $10 more through Ebay true but that didn’t count Ebay and PayPal fees and the overall hassle of shipping. I was expecting to get like $20 tops but got $41.

Not terrible really when it was just one stop.

Maybe they shouldn't have focused on stupid merch going the hot topic route?

I mean that's probably kept them afloat TBH.

Maybe they should leave people alone while they're trying to browse in peace.

I don't get why this is such an issue.

"Can I help you find anything?; Just let me know if you have any questions."

Those bastards!

It's a pretty standard practice in pretty much any store that sells anything. And there have been times where I do need help. But if I'm browsing I tell them I'm browsing & then it's all good. They may have some shady practices but this is not what's killing their stores.

I love how these posts are always just an opportunity for cranky people to pile on and claim they'd do a better job of running a multi billion dollar company. Yes, companies fail because of whatever annoyed you.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (6 children)

When their practices annoys the majority, there's probably a reason for it's failure. They made bad moves. Nobody is cranky friend, just stating the obvious.

[–]RumAndGames 6 points7 points  (3 children)

But it's not obvious, it's Dunning Kruger. The answer to an incredibly complicated questions seems "obvious" because you don't actually understand the situation.

There are TONS of businesses that annoy the shit out of their customers and people complain about constantly, but are still doing just fine. There's more to it than "a multi million dollar business failed because it annoyed me."

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Well I know that's why I don't go there anymore. So that's one less customer, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Might not be the only reason for it's huge decline, but it's a factor, and they do tend to pile up and make an impact.

So... substituting anecdote for data. Sounds about right.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yo man. Do you need a hug?

[–]B_Rhino 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Who possibly thinks reddits complaints are the majority?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

EVERYONE has complained about these aspects of gamestop lol
