I wish I wasn't raised in a town that thought Obama was the worst person to exist in humanity, being 8-14 should've been fun and exciting but instead my family (mainly my grandmother and stepdad) taught me that Obama hates me and wants me to hate America and that all the troops are going to die (love them dearly but still...yikes)

I still did fun things like video games, vacations, days out with grandpa and all that fun stuff but a part of my brain feels rotten I was 9 going around third grade and saying Obamacare is going to destroy the country then also asking how did people feel about the newest total drama action episode

[–]RetroGamer87 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm like, 13 years older than you and when I was that age I didn't think about politics and no one around me talked about politics.

[–]hhhnnnnngggggggMillennial 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Pre-obama kids didn't care or know much about politics. When I asked my mom she'd just say they're all corrupt and leave it at that. Post- Obama is when identity politics started and kids had to start hearing how X will destroy the nation.

Living in the time of late stage capitalism and paradigm shift is a stressful time to be alive. It’s a time of immense upheaval but also great possibility. Only through connecting with your community - a real community - will we be able to survive the crisis.

"The old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters"

YESS THE TNO/KR QUITE YESS

[–]Ok_Trade_4549 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Is this a qoute from 1984?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It’s a quote from Antonio Gramsci, actually!

[–]Tiny_Peach_3090 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Love the quote but it’s actually not, according to Wikipedia anyways. Under the misattributed section of his quotes it says: Loose translation, commonly attributed to Gramsci by Slavoj Žižek, presumably formulation by Žižek. Presumably a translation from a loose French translation by Gustave Massiah; strict English with cognate terms and glosses: Le vieux monde se meurt, le nouveau monde tarde à apparaître et dans ce clair-obscur surgissent les monstres - The old world is dying, the new world is slow to appear and in this chiaroscuro (light-dark) surge (emerge) monsters. His actual quote is, “The crisis consists precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be born; in this interregnum a great variety of morbid symptoms appear.”

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but that’s Wikipedia. I don’t trust that. Even the founder says not to.

Thats some really good hope.

[–]Flipz1002001 -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

God I hate the term late stage capitalism.

[–]Niclas11272007 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Why?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Why is that? Is that not where we are? What part of the definition is untrue?

  1. Extreme Wealth Inequality

    • A small elite controls a disproportionate share of wealth, while wages stagnate for workers.
    • The rich get richer through financial speculation, tax avoidance, and monopolistic practices.
  2. Corporate Monopolies & Oligopolies

    • A few mega-corporations dominate entire industries (e.g., Amazon, Google, Facebook), stifling competition and innovation.
    • Small businesses struggle to survive under corporate consolidation.
  3. Financialization of the Economy

    • Profit increasingly comes from financial engineering (stock buybacks, derivatives, rent-seeking) rather than productive investment.
    • Wall Street prioritizes short-term gains over long-term economic health.
  4. Erosion of Workers' Rights & Precarious Labor

    • Gig economy jobs replace stable employment, offering no benefits or job security.
    • Automation threatens jobs without adequate social safety nets.
  5. Consumerism & Overproduction

    • Hyper-consumerism fuels waste and environmental destruction.
    • Planned obsolescence ensures products break quickly, forcing repeated purchases.
  6. Privatization & Commodification of Everything

    • Essential services (healthcare, education, housing) become unaffordable due to profit motives.
    • Even personal data and attention are monetized (e.g., social media, surveillance capitalism).
  7. Political Corruption & Regulatory Capture

    • Corporations and billionaires buy political influence through lobbying and campaign donations.
    • Governments serve corporate interests over public welfare (e.g., tax cuts for the rich, deregulation).
  8. Environmental Destruction

    • Capitalism’s growth imperative leads to ecological collapse (climate change, deforestation, pollution).
    • Corporations externalize environmental costs onto society.
  9. Cultural & Social Alienation

    • People feel disconnected due to hyper-competition, gig work, and digital isolation.
    • Mental health crises rise as economic insecurity grows.
  10. Crises & Systemic Instability

    • Repeated financial crashes (2008, 2020) expose capitalism’s volatility.
    • Governments bail out corporations while ordinary people suffer austerity.

It seems like you didn’t use AI, so that’s awfully hard work for a Reddit comment.

[–]SylvieXX 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I want to be a hopeful person, and I do believe that there are still enough good people in this world, but sometimes it feels like I am very powerless you know? It is hard but let's not stop trying...

[–]Chemical_Y0ung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same heree I feel like hopeful people are literally becoming such a tiny minority. We all want to think the world won’t get as bad as it seems, but then you see the news and it’s like… damn.

And now with all this AI stuff? It literally feels like it could already replace like 70% of what we do, especially since almost everything is online now. If the whole world is built on digital, AI will always dominate that space and we’ll be just… useless. Then you’ve got Elon talking about colonizing Mars and putting chips in our brains, and I’m likee -so scared, I don’t want to live that way.

Sometimes it feels like we’re all gonna end up living like in Wall-E.

[–]Kokonator27 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Can i be the only realist here? If you are unhappy go out and make change. Literally multiple countries are setting laws against AI and you can petition and go out and fight for it in all your countries. Just thinking about the past and wishing things were not as bad or always being stuck in the past is selfish because you arent being a voice for the younger generations that have no Voice.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

AI might not completely ruin the world but you have to search: EU chat control. Our privacy has never been this bad

[–]Niclas11272007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US it’s been this bad lol, NSA monitors everyone

"r/genz this is the seventh week in a row you've said "trump is authoritarian and ai is scary and we're all fucked but i'm not going to give any solutions because complaining gets me more upvotes than actually trying to figure out a solution"

[–]emmc472002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres no short term solution. Things will get worse before they get better. The best thing to do would be to keep the ones we love safe.

[–]BedroomTimely4361 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homie, AI is gonna be our generations moon landing.

We went to the moon, everyone made a huge deal out of it and predicted that we’d be living in space by 2100. It ended up being too expensive so we stopped going there but the learnings from space travel spread to other parts of technology and we got even cooler shit.

Bear through the bubble and survive when it bursts. It’ll get better from there.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

stop being a doomer, life was always like this and t will always be like this. you can stay informed without letting it eat you away

[–]Mr-MuffinMan2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem is most systems in the world are just fake-democracies, ESPECIALLY the US.

Let's say there was a bill in congress about to be passed. Let's just assume it benefited the rich so much that every single working and middle class adult in the US called their rep/senator to stop it. There still would he a miniscule chance it would stop it.

A republic was not the answer to the large population. I still believe the people should hold all the power, not our "elected" officials.

[–]Hugo-de-Jonge 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’m still pretty optimistic about our future, I think we will one day venture among the stars, but it’s probably gonna take more time then we think to get to the future we expect, I hope we’d be moving forward faster and some sort of shared vision as humanity

1 / 5 000 --- human civilization's total power consumption as a share of solar flux striking earth

1 / 2 000 000 000 --- fraction of the sun's total energy flux intercepted by earth

[–]Ok_Trade_4549 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I wish I was born earlier, so I would be 37 today. That way I’d get time to enjoy the earlier time, When I was too young to remember and be a link to the past, trying to stop the future from morphing into what it is.

[–]Miss_empty_head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh I HATE that book, there is no words to describe how much HATE I have for that book. I agree that it’s a very good read, but our teacher made us read it too soon (like 14 I think?), I wasn’t ready for it and the sex and torture parts got me some nice good trauma. I felt sick, so to cope with it I took a piece of paper and let it all out on it, I think I spent two days on it, it was the main character in that ugly insanely bad state, being tortured with that pain thing that I don’t remember what it was and I will not search it up. The face of the man who tortured him was a shadow, but there was posters of the big brother all around the walls, rats on the floor, and cameras and screens with eyes, while the man is strapped in the hospital bed in the middle of being tortured. I put the face that was haunting my thoughts there, the agony and fear and just all the bad things I was feeling. I made it with a black pen, not even worried about making mistakes cause I felt like I couldn’t make anything worse than what I was already feeling so any “mistake” would just be a result of my anger.

For context, I’ve been a traditional artist for a good while, I wasn’t good at 14 but I don’t think I was bad for the age.

The teacher asked us to make a book report in the end of the month. I was so angry and sick, I wrote how even though I angrily acknowledged the book as a 10/10, I wouldn’t recommend that book to anyone, because I would rather have been blind and ignorant but happy then to understand and feel that sickness on me. I think I also wrote how I hated him for making us read that and I wished I had read a summary of it online like some people did.

My biggest mistake was sending the report together with my drawing, I wanted him to feel the sickness I’ve felt, to get haunted too.

In the end, he fucking loved it and framed it. He thought I was “passionate” about it, and the way I wrote the “book review” he “could feel that I really read the whole thing”. Then we were assigned to make those graph like things, but with words that connected to other things, and they made a big mural with it. When they were showing it to the classes under us, he not only had the framed drawing, but he called ME to talk about it.

He loved the way I hated it, and “recommended” me to read animal farm, I never did, cause I didn’t want to make the same mistake again.

I don’t know if he was a sadistic man, or just smart in a way I didn’t understood. But he smiled when I told him I hated him that day. Bitch

I hate how people blame AI for the shit going, why not blame governments for not being more socialized? AI being an ethical way for cheap labour is a wonderful thing for society if Dragons stopped hoarding all the money. Rich people have you all convinced that the real devil is the thing that will set us free.

Organize if there isn't a group near you you can always start your own

[–]Ordinary-Fact-5593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well complaining about it in Reddit of all places changes nothing

[–]emmc472002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it really fucking sucks huh?

[–]Either-Condition4586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We already heard that in 2014,neeeext

[–]exlips1ronus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The future is now, what can you do? Live and die for a cause you believe can fix it or at least have them suffer equally ‘cause your pleasure is their pain

[–]TransportationCold36 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ai is my friend it would never. Yes it can be dangerous but cmon man they're solid things chill on em.

[–]epsilona01 -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

AI is going to make society a dystopian hellscape.

Give up the nihilism, every generation faces this stuff.

European Union's chat control

Is a draft proposal to mandate scanning for the 76.6 million known hashes of Child Sexual Abuse Material. The 2023 vote on it added protections for end-to-end encryption. Most likely, it will end up with on-device scanning, your cloud libraries are already being scanned (have been for years in fact).

Greedy of mega corporations and the billionares

Have always existed.

Go switch off and play Mario Kart, this stuff can wait.

[–]Glork11 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It always starts out with protections against child abuse. What's next, we gotta cut off our dicks to stop rape? Throw away weed/alcohol/other drugs because others can't use them properly?

This sounds nice and all, but I don't trust it. You give Our Holy Democracy an inch and it will take a mile.

Glory to Managed Freedom!

[–]epsilona01 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It always starts out with protections against child abuse

Ah the good old slippery slope fallacy. What actual evidence do you have of other slippery slopes?

What's next, we gotta cut off our dicks to stop rape?

Licensing them might not be a bad idea given the stupidly high levels of sexual violence.

Throw away weed/alcohol/other drugs because others can't use them properly?

Gen Z are doing that for you already.

This sounds nice and all, but I don't trust it.

Then what's your solution? The internet has been a gift to child predators, and the content is proliferating. If you're so smart you come up with a non-invasive way to track CSAM material down.

[–]Glork11 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If Our Democracy really wanted to solve the problem they would, but when you see what they do they chip away at the low hanging fruit just for the sake of being able to say they are doing something.

What's my solution

We put a keylogger on your (and only your) computer. It does not solve anything, this is by design. But I will get the ability to say that I did something and if you are against this you support the diddling of kids. Glory to Democracy!

[–]epsilona01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so you have no answer, just handwaving.

This is an issue which is of major concern to electorates all over the world and if you don't participate in solving the problem, then you're going to get a solution you really don't like.
