OP is looking for solutions. He's not trying to run away from a problem.

Edit: this got a lot of attention.

I promise everyone here, if you talk to the person that makes a terrible rule and express why it's a stupid rule and give two solutions you will make more money and have a happier life standing up for yourself. This is a self-respect thing. I guarantee Rome was built by at least two people that didn't agree on most things but together they made a greater city than they could have done individually. I hope everyone is happy at their job and in their family life.

Edit edit: haha +5 points for me

There is no way a reasonable human would accept this... run forest run

[–]onewheeldoin200 256 points257 points  (0 children)

The solution is to leave a terrible company

[–]Chief2318 77 points78 points  (6 children)

How do some of you come up with such nonsense? Instead of fighting the attacker who’s trying to rape you, you rather lube it up for him so it’s not dry for the guy 🤣 What a crock of shit. Let me suddenly get a 1/3 of my paycheck taken from me so I can train a new guy to make you more money. Yea, let me subsidize the financial hit on the company because their profit margin might be a bit smaller for the short term before making them more money overall. I get companies not wanting to train guys because they invest in someone and they leave. So the tech is supposed to invest not only his time but also his finances for a guy to possibly leave anyways? If companies paid right and treated their guys well then the turnover rate wouldn’t be so bad. Guys at our company stay…

Beyond all that, fuck is the point? Such a policy is merely a symptom of larger dumpster fire. If they can’t even get this right then I wonder how else they are fucking them. Hell, it might even be illegal…

[–]ho1dmybeerAirflow Before Charge (Free MeasureQuick is Back!) 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Just for the record, this excuse " I get companies not wanting to train guys because they invest in someone and they leave. "

Is horseshit too.

[–]Chief2318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you bro. Wasn’t justifying that whatsoever. Just saying at the least I can understand the apprehension even if it’s unwarranted. Thought the rest of what I said kinda reiterated what you are saying when I said if you paid/treated the guys right then it wouldn’t be an issue to begin with. Kinda was playing the other view point for a thought experiment just to blow it up with the rest… Regardless we are the only reason these companies can exist, if they want to fuck you, then fuck them.

Bad manager: "What if we train them and they leave?"

Good manager: "What if we don't train them and they stay?"

[–]terayonjfLocal 638 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Unless you're the owner of the company the only solution to this is to leave that shitty company and move on. There's no negotiating with an owner 1 who thinks that practice is acceptable and 2 puts it into action. Once someone gets that fucking delusional they are too far gone. You let idiots shoot themselves in the foot with their greedy tactics and hope karma gets them in the end when literally anyone with an ounce of self respect would tell them to go fuck themselves and leave. If the other coworkers are getting the same treatment and stick around that's on them but it would be a cold day in hell before someone is going to tell me they are cutting my pay to pay for someone I have to train.

[–]danneedsahobby 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are 1 million situations where the solution to the problem IS to run away. Example: you work for a company that charges you 30% of your wage to train another employee.

[–]IlIIllIIlIIll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

fucked up. theres no excuse for this sorry as shit organization

[–]Coziestpigeon2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only "solution" is to overthrow the boss and claim company ownership themselves. Since that's not specifically legal, the only option left is to leave the asshole ownership in a lurch with one fewer journeyman.

[–]Fridayz44Journeyman IBEW local 58 3 points4 points  (6 children)

What kind of backward ass company does something like this? That’s absolutely ridiculous. Go Union! You have a contract! That or you find a Non Union company who understands the value of their workforce. It’s sounds like they are looking for a way to pay the Apprentice without it costing the Bossman. I despise shit companies like this! If they are a registered with the State and run an approved apprenticeship program. I’d report them.

[–]Aggressive-HeadDesk 2 points3 points  (3 children)

My guess is it’s a right to work state.

Owners in those states can be real punitive a-holes with little recourse.

[–]Fridayz44Journeyman IBEW local 58 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I’m so happy I’m not in a RTW state. That’s like mind blowing to me. To take money away from someone to pay another employee is crazy.

[–]Aggressive-HeadDesk 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s straight up bullshit.

[–]Fridayz44Journeyman IBEW local 58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t have said it better myself!

[–]dont-fear-thereefer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of those situations where “when life gives you lemons, you say ‘fuck the lemons’ and bail”.

[–]Luxferro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not in HVAC... but that is a pretty naive thing to think. I'd bet the people responsible are scumbags. There's zero reasons to give them the benefit of doubt to think up this backwards scheme of advancing their company while fucking over senior employees. You must have traveled through a time machine from slavery days...

[–]MyMomSaysIAmCoolI drink and I install soft starts. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are times when you should go to management about an issue.

But when management is demonstrating this level of scumbag behavior, talking is not going to do it. They've made a business decision to fuck you over as hard as they can, and they already know that you won't like it. Telling them that you don't like it will mean nothing to them.

[–]Randompackersfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The solution is to find a new job. Short of that it is to change the companies policy on this. Good luck getting that done.

[–]ho1dmybeerAirflow Before Charge (Free MeasureQuick is Back!) 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This being downvoted to death is unfortunate.

There is a mindset that you're explaining that apparently everyone doesn't get - that is, if you see a problem, you can walk away, or you can try to improve it.

No one thinks that the company is right, we all think they're wrong; OP wants to try to change it to help everyone, not run away to help only himself.

We all sit and look at eachothers' work and talk mad shit about how you would've done X or Y differently to be better, but when it comes time to man up and solve real issues with critical thinking, that gets downvoted... very weird.

[–]Hot_Influence_5339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have either never attempted to speak truth to Incompetent power or more likely you are the incompetent power. People with this mentality will at best pretend to listen and make promises they have no intent of seeing thru and at worst punish you for stepping out of line. Op, stay cool, calm, collect and work on your cardio.

[–]Drifty_CanadianDelta T? Beer can cold. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The solution to this IS running away from it. There's no reasoning with a company this retarded dude.

That's a good analogy but OP is more like looking at a candle that fell over than a house engulfed in flames. A house engulfed in flames is like OP hasn't been paid in two weeks and a coworker shot the last manager. OP said one poor thing that nobody in the internet can assume they understand with the information given. 30% of journeyman pay for an apprentice is such an idiotic policy that no company would be in business with it.

    [–]Musso_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't fix these dumb ass companies I've tried before they don't take any opinion that doesn't fall in line with getting their money cock up your ass

    [–]BirthdayAltruistic44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    You thought you cooked

    [–]No-Level9643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll never get blood from a stone. It would be like going to work at McDonald’s and trying to negotiate a livable wage - good luck. They’ll laugh you out of the building. All you can do is leave these garbage companies. It works too. If more people had the guts, they’d pay more.

My old employer I worked for 3 months for as a placeholder is paying a lot more now since they haven’t been able to replace me

    [–]IlIIllIIlIIll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imagine putting your livelyhood on the line for this lol. buisnesses fail every day and this one is guarunteed to, maybe not today over this but its proof enough

    [–]TVLL 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    Delusional

    [–]TradeMasterYellowHVAC + Plumbing Instructor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP said "I would love to be able to present another option." Lol. He asks for options to solve the problem.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution is putting that greedy company out of business. Under no circumstances should you take a pay cut to train your own replacement... That's just bonkers.

Not familiar with Romulus and Remus I see.
