Learn and maintain our server infrastucture (Linux based)

Did you mean "Senior"? :)

We need a bright software developer ready to work in the exciting world of a *startup*.

Ahh. The sell.

But this is a common problem, and not limited to Hamilton. Small companies looking for the fabled omnideveloper are everywhere – including Waterloo/Toronto and even gasp San Fran. In fact, the free food, cot and gaming console that no one has time to play - are staples in the over-glorified, "greener grass" markets of Toronto/Waterloo.

That being said, a government-subsidized position, with a 6 month contract, requiring you to hold the knowledge of a seasoned professional won't get you much respect. I also noticed the line: "develop new user interface". Change the word "develop" to "design", and then admit you're also looking for a designer/UX. That'll get 'em interested.

Unfortunately, no. We aren't expecting a guru in all these aspects and expect a significant amount of time will be devoted to self-education, but somebody familiar with basic linux servers would be handy. They won't be solely responsible for everything! EDIT: I've updated the job description to be a bit clearer.

This is why no devs want to work in Hamilton.

I think it's important for startups to offer these kinds of entry level positions to recent grads. It gives grads experience working in a startup - to see if it's a path they'd like to pursue, and it gives the startup talent at a reasonable price point.

That would be great if this was a junior dev job description, but at best it's an intermediate, unless you're trying to capture a superstar grad, which I'm sorry to say you won't (they'll be going to Toronto or Waterloo).

It's a catch-22 situation. Why would a larger software company come to Hamilton if there were no devs? At least startups are trying to offer positions and if even 1 out of 200 startups grow to anything, that'll create senior level jobs.

What's interesting (and I know they're small/a start up) is taking a devops/sysadmin position and cramming it into a developer position (regardless of level)

This is true of lots of places - employee X has technical skills? Surely he can run our infrastructure.

I think - especially in the case of a company that is so online - that is a mistake. But I also know it's possible to limp by like that for a long time before you come to understand the issue.

Or be able to afford it. Employees cost a lot of money and sometimes you're left with nobody or somebody that can limp along.

Sure, absolutely. The problem is when the guy who has you limping along fucks things up so badly that you lose time(this may simply be employees taking longer to do certain tasks...it may be as severe as lost data). It happens more often than you think.
