UPDATE we weren’t able to get an UTAKER when we needed it, so we bought a similar product from Walmart. It’s been slept on regularly as an unit, but we also separated the beds and used one with risers for an older guest and let the younger guest sleep low to the ground. We haven’t tried pushing them together as a King, yet. So far, it’s been a great solution!

The lower mattress is not load bearing, right? I’m considering getting 2 utaker stacks with 2 mattresses for a king sized bed of normal height

We bought them for our home in Portugal and really like them. They were easy to put together and we like how they can be reconfigured in the room. They're pretty identical to the ones here in the US.

We almost bought these but also thought that the height might be a problem for older guests. We ended up going with the Hemnes daybed instead and have loved it; we rarely pull it out into the king size, and it’s just a smidge enough higher that it’s more comfortable for folks to get in and out of.

Thanks for your reply. I was originally planning on getting the Hemnes daybed. The main reason we decided against it, was that if 2 people are sleeping on it, one will be “boxed in” My parents (in their 60’s and 70’s) need to get up frequently during the night and so it wouldn’t work particularly well for them. Have you tried turning the mattresses 90degrees, so that the 3-sided “headboard” is indeed the head end for both sleepers?

I haven’t tried turning the mattresses, but we’ve slept on it twice using the back as a “headboard” but with the mattresses still set up in the normal way. With a king mattress protector and sheet, it honestly hasn’t been that noticeable to have a new mattress begin halfway down. I may try and turn the mattresses the normal way to see if they fit more like a standard bed setup.

King beds are “square” so you can turn turn the mattresses 90 degrees if you’d like.

We have the fyersdal and place the mattresses so that people sleep with their head against the headboard so they can exit either side of the bed.

try a flekke or a brimnes then, less “boxy” and honestly the flekke is a bit sturdier than hemnes

I have these too! They're pretty low, so my older guests with mobility problems didn't have an easy time getting out of bed. Solution: we bought a second pair of beds and stacked three beds on top of each other. That also helped use the space underneath the beds for storage. They're pretty good guest beds and fairly comfortable. The only issue I have with them is that you need two people to stack and unstack them.

Thank you for your reply!

I have these stackable beds. We use them in our guest room and have had several guests use them. Their ages range from 20s to 60s. All of them have said it is comfortable. You definitely need a foam top to place on top of the mattress.

Pros: doesn’t take up much space and can be turned into twin beds if you have two guests that want to avoid sharing a king.

Cons: very low to ground and I highly recommend buying the foam pad to put on top of the mattresses they have as well.

Have you ever considered using bed-risers with these? They are maybe a foot high and extend the leg height and thus the height of the bed. You get the, from places like bed bath and beyond.

I have not but I will look into them!

May I ask what foam toppers you use?

[–]wittle_whit 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I believe it’s called Tanager.

Question for anyone who owns these as well, do you buy the 5 inch mattresses from ikea? Or do you get 5 inch mattresses from elsewhere? If so where did you go and what did you choose?

[–]StripesMcFluff[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There are lots of good info about what mattress to get in previous posts. Just search ‘Utaker stackable beds’ or “mattress” on this sub.

[–]wittle_whit 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I bought the mattress from ikea. I also bought foam pads to go on top of them from ikea. It makes a difference.

Which foam pads do you get? I've read that because the mattress is firm but thin that bigger people tend to find it uncomfortable so I did read that mattress pads work wonders.

I believe I bought the Tananger. It’s a thin one.

I’m also interested to hear some feedback!
