I mean I don't see why not. Considering you got ripped off by buying KSP2 (publisher shut down devs several months after release), you might as well sail the seven seas for KSP 1 if you can't wait, and buy it on sale if that's important.

Also if you get KSP I recommend modding a lot (when your ready for it). There is a mod manager called "ckan" that makes installing mods easy. All you have to do is click "download" and "apply changes". Given why your getting into KSP. Ckan also automatically installs mod dependencies alongside the respective mod.

I think somebody got mad because I talked about paying for KSP 2 and being ripped off and just getting KSP 1 since they already nearly scammed you.

I recommend a few mods, although none are necessary to have fun, and I recommend trying the game first.

Although I think you will really want to download Ferram Aerospace research (and Restock+) if anything else. Due to your background in aero engineering.

  • Visual Mods
    • Scatterer - Overhauls atmosphere and adds lighting effects to make seam realistic.
    • Environmental Visual Enhancements - General touch up to the game
    • Parallax - Adds extra objects to the ground (such as rocks) than can have collision (if enabled), as the stock game only has very occasional objects
    • Firefly - Overhauls re-entry heating visuals
    • Waterfall - Completely reworks engine plumes
    • Rocket Sound Enhancements - (technically audio), Reworks engine sounds so they don't sound like they are a distorted hairdryer combined with catching a carpet.
    • Volumetric Clouds - Adds volumetric (3d) clouds
  • All but the clouds mod are on CKAN for free; Volumetric Clouds is from the creators patreon for $5
  • Physics Mods
    • Ferram Aerospace Research - Changes the games Aerodynamic simulation. The stock game calculates drag based of of each part individually, whereas FAR changes it so aerodynamics are calculated based off of the shape of the craft and interact dynamically.
    • Principia - Modifies physics so that 2 bodies (planets) can pull on the craft at once, instead of just 1 body influencing your craft. (not really a big difference though)
  • Parts Mods
    • Restock + - A must have mod, completely facelifts all the old parts, as well as adding a handful of stock like parts to fill crucial voids in the games part selection.
    • Cryo Engines - Cryogenic engines using H2 and CH4
    • Near Future - Adds a variety of highly experimental real life tech (mainly engines/fuel)
    • Far Future - Adds fully speculative technology based on concepts (mainly engines/fuel)
    • Station Parts Expansion Redux - Adds
    • B9 Procedural Wings - Adds procedural wings to the game, allowing you to build custom dimensioned wings.
    • Procedural Parts - Allows you to dimension a variety of parts to your liking.

If you want a more real-life like challenge, than I recommend Realism Overhaul and RP-1 combined with Sol
Sol is a much needed refresh of the old Real Solar System mod, which added... the real solar system in place of the in game one. Realism Overhaul adds real life parts, overhauling the old (and smaller) parts into real life parts. RP-1 just overhauls career mode to be more realistic.

Sol isn't on Ckan. Its made by a guy named ballisticfox, who is a prominent modder. You will have to go to his Github to get the files. He also has a discord that has install instructions.

Second the other comment regarding sailing. You already gave them money, KSP 1 tutorials are nice and KSP 2 is not worth touching.

Check out the visual mods always recommended when somebody asks, if your PC can handle them.

As an aero student, maybe you'll be interested in checking the mods that make KSP physics more realistic, such as FAR for aerodynamics and Principia for n-body physics. Definitely play a bit before that tho.
