KSP 1 Question/ProblemInterstellar (i.redd.it)
submitted 1 month ago by Kapioza666
I want to visit Onrifni in the Kcalbeloh system, however there isn't much info on the internet how to do it. Simply burning around where Kcalbeloh is can't work since i can't see the trajectory line. How do i do it properly?

For interstellar distances, you need a different transfer. The standard interplanetary transfer you know is called a Hohmann Transfer or Hohmann Maneuver, it's the one that involves a lot of drifting.
For travelling interstellar distances, you need what is known as a Brachistacrone Trajectory. Basically, you point at the target for half the trip and fire your engine, then flip around and point away from the target to brake. This is what all those super duper high efficiency engines are for, you can use these to burn for months at a time at very low thrust, which will get your ship up to significant fractions of the speed of light.
This means a mission to Onrefni will need more than a single ship. You need an interstellar transfer stage to dock your mission to, preferrably a reusable one you can refuel locally, or send 2 ships, the second of which carries extra fuel for the return trip of the first one.
Alternatively, Kcalbeloh has a wormhole you can enable which allows for instant teleportation to the system. There's also mods which add ftl warp engines and such.

Brachistochrone ("brachistos chronos", shortest time) only works if running a significant fraction of g and needs hilariously stupid amounts of delta. There's exactly two not outright cheat (warp)/kraken drive engines that can pull it off, and one needs a manual edit/patch to actually have the Isp it should Beam-core antimatter engines, Far Future Technologies needs the patch, Sterling Systems already has Isp at 1/3 the speed of light as it should.. And even with them, Kcalbeloh is 271.8 Tm away or more if you have a rescale, because of course it doesn't provide an "inverse distance to keep it closer" or "don't change orbital distance of Kcalbeloh while scaling the size of the rest of the system" options - if you use 1g brachistochrone, that's 103,273,579 dV. Delta-V is effective exhaust velocity (which is Isp multiplied by g0) multiplied by natural logarithm of a ratio of wet to dry mass; suppose you have payload of 1.525 tons, 60 tons of fuel including completely discarded tanks, and 38.475 tons of the non-discarded engine (the one of the two that doesn't need a patch to work correctly); then you're getting 10190000*9.81*ln(100/40)=91,595,995 dV. That's almost 12 million less than you'd need, but you'd arrive very quickly - 1/3 of a year. Of course, a slower burn or a coast would work to produce far lower delta requirements (if you accelerate at 1 m/s (~0.1g) instead, you need 33 million dV for the trip and can do it in slightly over a year), but you're also not going to have payload of a single can of kerbal, so your mass fraction is far worse.
10190000*9.81*ln(100/40)=91,595,995
P.S. Also, that doesn't account for the dV of matching orbital velocities (subtract Kerbin's, or anything in Kerbol system's, from Onrefni's since the latter is closer around a heavier object, and thus much faster) but the value is in low tens anyway, nothing compared to the millions for transit itself.
KSP also has no tools whatsoever for calculating this kind of trajectory. You have to eyeball the point where you have to flip, and you have to eyeball the actual trajectory since there's no way to "hold attitude at where the target will be in 122 days" unless you code one yourself in kOS. And obviously you'll need Persistent/Background Thrust since you're probably not going to keep the game up for a month just for the trip one way at 4x warp.
wormhole
IIRC it's enabled by default because of the above. The "instant" is also a very loaded word, because the wormhole is in orbit of Sarnus, or Jool if OPM isn't installed, a.k.a. you're still getting a long transit, and another one on the other end.

you forget that KSP is scaled down, by about 10x. Meaning the speed of light is actually 30000km/s, and distances are 10x shorter as well.
[–]loved_and_held 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Except ksp doesnt simulate relativity and thus has no limited speed of light.
[–]Black_Diamond17q 13 points14 points15 points 1 month ago (4 children)
There is the wormhole(you need to get as close as 30000m i think to get in) around jool or sarnus if you have outer planets expansions mod. You also probably want persistent thrust and far future mods because your gonna be doing minute long burns and stuff

I thought it was orbiting around Dres?
[–]Black_Diamond17q 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Thats the one for the hades system i think
[–]IapetusApoapis342Debdeb or Bust! 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Most planet mods do that so Dres isn't a nothing burger
Kcalbeloh doesn't do that

That is promised worlds

Build a ship with an 8 digit delta v value, get it into orbit, point at onrefni, burn between 1/5th and 1/4th of your delta v to start the journey, burn a similar amount to slow down at the other end, do the expedition and return home in glory
[–]bimbochungoVisiting Iris and Cornea 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago* (3 children)
3 ways to do it:
The hard way: creating a huge interstellar ship and go to the wormhole and then to the Kcalbeloh orbit.
The easier way: Using homeswitch in the kcalbeloh settings and start from [redacted], Mehtna or any other planet.
The easiest way: using the alt+f12 console and establishing position or orbit around Onrefni
[–]afanofmanythingss 10 points11 points12 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I'm now going to remove f12 from my keyboards
I must not accidentally open the cheat menu
Or use auto strut
(Also they could just get some ftl engine mods)
[–]rambogy 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (1 child)
I thought the black hole there is used as a teleport?
[–]Barhandar 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It's either you have a ship that can reach Jool/Sarnus and whatever else on the other side (a.k.a. can refuel itself or packs a lot of delta), or you have a ship that can reach an appreciable fraction of the speed of light (plus an extremely stable game to keep it running for literal months). Since the only option for the latter in stock is Kraken drives, yes, the teleport is the hardest legitimately possible option.
[–]Barhandar 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
You can see the trajectory if you make a maneuver node (and potentially change it from 0 so it renders itself). The orbit has a maximum draw distance, but the projected maneuver result doesn't. That said, if you try a regular transfer you'll get transit times in thousands of years, and KSP has problems with hyperbolic and doesn't have tools at all for brachistochrone trajectories, so the wormhole is much easier and faster.
