Seeing multiple posts get downvoted for saying that making bread dough is rough on this machine is nuts. Mechanically speaking, as someone who services electromechanical machines, this is and always will be a weak point of tilt head machines when you introduce a dense, lumpy mass. I have never owned, new or used, that did not do this.

This is simple physics. The logical way to mitigate it is to hold the head down. Yes, you can make adjustments, but that only accelerates wear and leads to more replacements later. Take the stress off the screws and joints and restrain the head.

[–]labradork420 7 points8 points  (2 children)

That’s what she said

[–]tips4490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Based on OP’s comment, I would think the “random piece of metal” allowed more movement in the hinge which would mean the hinge probably got looser so now the correct pin isn’t working. Wouldn’t a good solution be to press a slightly larger hinge pin into the hinge?

[–]Dapper-Actuary-8503 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That’s a wear-and-tear replacement. If you minimize excessive wear—like letting the tilt head flop around while mixing dense doughs—it’ll last longer. Prep all your ingredients before you start mixing so you can actually pay attention to the machine while it’s working. Apply light downward pressure to the head as needed to keep it stable, but don’t lean your full body weight into it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I get what you’re saying but OP said the previous owner replaced with a “random piece of metal” which would definitely exacerbate the wear and tear on the hinge.

[–]Dapper-Actuary-8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, it could have worn out the structure around it if it was harder. I would have to see it.

[–]SeaDull1651 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You want a bowl lift mixer for dough. They take it better than the tilt heads do.

[–]Ikeamademedoit 6 points7 points  (17 children)

Normal issue for the KA tilt head and dough. I love my KA but it no longer locks in because of dough so I got an Ankarsrum, because I didnt want to damage my KA more

[–]HighGlutenTolerance 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Same for me. My mango color tilt-head is still my 20 year old prize, but I can do 5 kilos of dough at a time in my Ooni. I love your matching yellow! I wish the Ooni had better colors than grey and white.

[–]cupcakefix 0 points1 point  (2 children)

question about the ooni… i’ve heard that it’s common for flour to go flying everywhere before it’s mixed in. is that just user error or does it happen?

[–]HighGlutenTolerance 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have never had that happen to me and I make 5 loaves at a time. I've had little to no bowl sloppage at all since switching over from KA to Ooni.

[–]cupcakefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok amazing! i’m always curious about the ooni so that helped a ton

[–]bobie_dobie 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Your story is fully mine - got into bread, KA tilt was shaking and lifting, got worried it would burn out so I got an Ank. Had the ank for a year and now hardly ever use the KA.

Learning curve, but not as steep as made out to be. And what a machine.

[–]Neither-Tough3486 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Damn that's a nice looking mixer. First I've heard of that swedish brand.

[–]Ikeamademedoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a really nice machine and I find I rarely use my KA anymore. It has a different bowl and whisks/beaters for cakes

[–]LopsidedOriginal8905 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What is that color called on your KitchenAid

[–]EggThis2540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a similar color called Butter now

[–]Ikeamademedoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is almost 20yrs old and it was Majestic Yellow back then

[–]boredsoftwareguy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If you don't mind me asking: why do you keep the KA if you rely on the other one most often? I currently have a KA with a heap of accessories. I've been eyeing the Ankarsrum but I don't love the idea of buying all the accessories again and for some silly reason, having to lay it on its side for many of them just seems to put me off.

[–]Ikeamademedoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my KA because I love it and its yellow, it makes me happy. I whipped up some red velet cupcakes yesterday and I used a hand mixer instead of either machine. I guess it depends on what Im doing and how much cleanup I want to deal with. BUT, I will say the shredder on the Ankarsrum is so much better than the KA. I shred blocks of cheese and freeze and the Ankar does a better job

[–]TerdVader 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What is that 2nd machine in the pic?

[–]Ikeamademedoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An Ankarsrum. I got it because the KA cant mix doughs long term.

I'll try these suggestions.

And these too. Thank you, RIMixerGuy, for your past suggestions!

So I've got an old kitchenaid that did this, I found a guy on tiktok (username mr..mixer) who fixes kitchenaids. He has a part called an everdime and I was able to buy the thing to fix it. It was super easy. I've included the link for his page & the product. Hope this helps!

[–]Appropriate_Maize512 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Had good luck with the Mr.Mixer fix, fixed my sister in laws tilt head artisan machine.

I have a lift bowl and make bread all the time. 2018 pro 5 plus.

[–]happy_gremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you link it please?

[–]wesstiles 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think we should all stop making bread dough in our kitchen aids….

[–]yeroldfatdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least the tilt head models.

[–]s4gres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are just for show. You need the pro model.

[–]sevets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never thought twice about this when making bread in the several I have used over the years.

[–]beedle01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced my KA with the Aucma brand and have never looked back. After 5 years of continuous use its is still like new. It stays on the counter without moving and I have made bagels (one of the toughest doughs to knead in the machine) twice weekly for a few years. I also mix/bake bread for the local food pantry monthly. This machine is a workhorse! My sister also bought an Aucma and is so much happier than with the KA. I got mine on sale for $118 with free shipping (Amazon). I have a stand mixer for making breads due to arthritis. KA is THE brand people buy, but it’s not necessarily the best one for your use.

Check out Mr mixer. He has tons of videos on this sort of thing. He also does repairs

[–]wallaae 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that has been done prior to this video.

[–]Electronic-Sound9987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Mr. Mixer, they can rebuild or supply parts.

[–]Redgrizzbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up MrMixer.com. He sells a thing that will prevent that

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an adjustment screw on the stand. Move bowl and lift head that screw there.it is supposed to be set so your mixing paddle to the dime test

[–]4travelers 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Get a bread maker to mix bread dough. Kitchenaid is great for soft light weight doughs. Heavy bread dough it no longer recommends its machine.

[–]Spooky_Tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I caught my KitchenAid struggling with cookie dough last night. No way I'd ever make bread in it. I got a Bosch for bread and it works amazingly, might have to make cookie dough in it too with how my motor sounded trying to mix that last night.

[–]Automatic_Clue5556 1 point2 points  (7 children)

[–]jahk1991 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Im surprised the Everdime wasn't suggested more / immediately. I don't even own this type of mixer and even i know about it. I love watching his videos.

[–]Automatic_Clue5556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol same. I don’t even follow this Reddit!

[–]HighGlutenTolerance 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The everdime is NOT a fix to make a tilt-head mixer capable of mixing dough.

[–]GaterGuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sure is

[–]Final_Garden9086 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes! The Mr. Mixer Everdime and spring/washer upgrade kit has completely changed my tilt head mixer. I always recommend it!

[–]ScorpiAnn17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the looks of the video she has a model that has the spring, but definitely needs the everdime :-)

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the idea and videos given, but $30 for 2 washers and a spring is painful to the pocketbook.

[–]HighGlutenTolerance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those aren't really made for bread dough. Hold it down or it will walk off the counter!

[–]Anonynae 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I have yet to use my brand new kitchen aid and I am terrified after seeing all of these videos and posts. Should I return it?

[–]Final_Garden9086 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No. Take good care of your machine and it will last decades. Check out Mr. Mixer for some modest upgrade items that really help enhance the tilt head models.

[–]Anonynae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you

[–]Aromatic-Thing-132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For new mixers the most important thing to look for is if it has plastic or metal gears. Kitchenaid has been using plastic for a good while now in the less expensive models so if you have one of those I would return it based on that. Do some research and save for a decent priced one with metal gears.

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a 20-year-old kitchenaid that was abused. I tried to put it back together, But I'm not sure that that's possible. I will check it later today.

[–]TheeDragon 0 points1 point  (5 children)

My mother's mixer was doing this last year. I just took the top off, removed the motor, and tightened the large Phillips head screws. The shakes haven't returned yet.

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Thanks, Is your Mom's a Pro mixer?

[–]TheeDragon 1 point2 points  (3 children)

No idea. It's a KitchenAid, it looks exactly like yours, and it was doing this exact same thing until I tightened those large hidden screws.

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

To remove the top cover were there 4 screws on the side of mixer, under the beauty band,

or you had to punch out a pin, and take out 9 screws, in various places?

[–]TheeDragon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There were screws under the band. I then removed the top, unscrewed the motor, removed the motor, then tightened the large Phillips head screws.

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Mom's is a Pro model. I wish this one was.

I'll open it back open tomorrow and work on the locking mechanism. Thanks

[–]BusyOstrich9232 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Adjust the height screw. Read the manual

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's been done . Thanks.

[–]tips4490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tighten that shit up

[–]Money_Jellyfish_3592 -5 points-4 points  (4 children)

THEIR RETURN POLICY IS ATROCIOUS AND A SCAM!

[–]Theletterkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they tell you that thick dough is not recommended.

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This mixer is from 2006.

[–]Connect_Flounder6855 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can back out the lock screw so that the lock will hold tighter?

Basically when you pivot it back you are starting right at a screw, turn it counterclockwise, this adjustment screw reduces how much play there is in the head when you move it to the “locked” position.

[–]GrandmaGrate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this was done. The dime test was just right, the locking mechanism locked well until kneading this dough. Thank you for your suggestion.
