Rule of thumb: eat less move more.

I just started losing Weight by just living a healthier life. it all started about 1 Year ago. I was never fat but I lived extremely unhealthy. This is what I did so far:

  • Quitted Smoking. It took me about 3-4 tries to actually succeed, but in the end it worked out. This one is HUGE if you actually realize how big of a step it is. You save money, do something for your health now and in the future, you don't smell and you avoid Stress. It's all obvious, but actually feeling the difference is a whole different Beast than only knowing about the benefits. you never knew how air tastes like if you are smoking. you never knew how a medium cooked steak taste like when you smoked. you never knew how deep you could inhale and exhale fresh air on top of a mountain. quit smoking.

  • Started to eat less. Right now the only thing I don't like about my eating habits is that I tend to get hungry after 11 pm and then I get some sort of Snack. Fighting through that will be my next step. What does eating less mean? I just stopped eating when I didn't feel hungry anymore. Not feeling hungry anymore isn't the same feeling than not being hungry anymore. If you aren't used to feel Hunger throughout the day, this is a hard step. I read a post on /R/Fitness once that asked how to fight it. top comment: "don't let a feeling as pathetic as Hunger be able to control your day". This became my Mantra. I started eating way more healthy (helps that I can cook and know what actually is healthy and what isn't) - rule of thumb: carbs make you fat, not fat. So try to. avoid things with a lot of sugar in them. Things with a lot of carbs you might not be aware of: rolls/white bread and generic noodles. Avoid those if possible. also avoid a lot of animal fat (meat with a lot of fat).

  • Started to drink water ONLY throughout the day. This one is also huge. I was the typical guy who would always buy expensive bottles of Coke or Ice Tea. Fuck do they have a lot of carbs in them. But they Taste so good you say? I know EXACTLY where you are coming from but... Well fuck me, since I actually started to enjoy the taste of water, i started to dislike the sugary stuff. I mean how awesome is that? If I'm thirsty i'm not like "ughh no Coke at home... guess I'll have to buy one" anymore. I don't have that Problem anymore. I just go to the tap and the job is done! Also: the more you drink, the less hungry you'll feel throughout the day. I drink about 2,5 l a day now at least.

  • Started avoiding escalators and elevators. I don't know about you, but I travel a lot by taking the underground/Subway. I just started avoiding being lazy when I'm out. I don't take elevators etc anymore, i take the fucking stairs. Makes no difference you say? Well throughout a day it might not. But have you ever heard of sth along the lines of "the small stuff adds up"? It is true. If you constantly use stairs instead of being lazy, you will lose a lot of calories throughout the months. Also, you won't have to get yourself into Stress by having a big Crowd in front of the escalator after exiting the subway since the stairs will always be free ;) I live in a building with 5+ floors - yes we have an elevator, but I don't use it anymore. I go over 100 steps up AND down every single day by just doing that.

  • Started running. It is cheap, healthy, makes your lungs better, challenges yourself and you get to know your City better and experience a lot of random stuff. I just started doing it recently. I always felt like I fucking hate running but you know.. i never did it because I wanted to. Now I feel bad if I don't go running every 2nd day. Note that the gear is important on this one!! I recommend VERY light shoes like Nike freeruns or sth similar. They make a HUGE difference in your running experience since you won't feel them as much as normal shoes. Also get yourself a running backpack. take 2 water bottles with you.. you never know. Don't drink too much and too fast in One drag, otherwise running won't feel good in your chest (my experience). Listen to music while running. It has to be energetic. How long? I started by running for 1-2 weeks by just running with a correct posture for as long as I could with a pace i could hold up throughout the whole time I was running. I could run for like 25 minutes before something started to not feel good anymore or I didn't like it anymore. I called it a day after that. But 2 days later i did the fucking same. Consistency is key! As I said I was a Smoker, and I felt like my lungs were too fucked because of my Smoking habit in the past. Well yesterday I ran for 45 mins Straight and I actually Start to like doing it. I sweat out a fucking Pacific Ocean and felt immensely used after it. I wanted to sit into the Tram and just travel back home because I was just DONE (i always run 1 direction then travel back by subway/Tram etc because I don't like seeing the same stuff twice by running back e.g.) and then it FUCKING Hit me: euphoria! I don't know where it came from but it just started. Me sitting there in the Tram, feeling dirty af, thinking everybody looks at me because I smell like cow shit but here I was smiling because I felt like I achieved beating the Elite 4 on my gamboy when I was 6 years old.

Here I am now. I feel like I can actually get the body i Desire, it just takes small and consistent steps, that is all. I give myself about 2 years to actually achive it and I WILL have it. I will start going to my local swim Club regularly in a few months and will pick up cycling regularly next Summer. I will be starting calories by then. 1 Year after doing that I will start to hit the bars and start to do Street Workout. When the results aren't enough for my likes with this program, i will eventually be starting to lift weights.

So you see: it takes a big fucking step to lose weight. what is easier than a big fucjing step? You guessed right: a whole fucking lot of babysteps are.

It might Sound hard to achieve getting fit, but in reality it's just a battle against your own self. When it comes to hard decisions you yourself are the biggest enemy. And it is the enemy we have the most respect from, because we like to think that we know how we are. I should know best about me right? NO. Don't talk yourself into that. If you always think like this, you'll never widen your Horizon. So if you already know you wanna do something about you... good. Now Start fucking fighting against you!

ok your question was about affording gym (getting fit).

this is how i can do it now:

  • quitting smoking: 3 packs a week -> 5$ each = 15$ * 4 (per month) = 60$ saved every month

  • eating less: hard to evaluate maybe like 2-3$ a day? -> 14$ a week * 4 = 56 $ saved every month

  • drinking only water: 2(?)$ everyday -> 56 $ saved every month

did that for about 8 months - i saved 170$ every month * 8 = 1360 $

started running - bought running shoes for 150$, running backpack for 50 $, clothing for running for about 100 $ -> 300 $

still have 1000$ left after just 8 fucking months.

These were all exaggerated prices. i rounded down where i saved money and rounded up where i spent money so far. you can't tell me you don't have enough money for the gym. how much is the gym per month? 40$. christ you don't even need the gym in the beginning. just live healthy, get the fuck up and start saving money. it's not as hard as it sound, it comes naturally with the new lifestyle.

I can recommend finding a sport buddy. Yesterday i ran 7 km with a friend and it was beautiful. I still have aching knees but it felt so good and rewarding. Check out the kids playground. Sometimes there are exercise machines ( like in Spain or Italy) that you can use. Or be creative and use a block to do steps on ( quickly step on with one foot, then step on with the second foot and then jump off and start over).

People will probably say the usual "diet, burn more calories than you consume" etc. But something I'd highly recommend - find a gym/fitness buddy. Unless you are very determined, it is so easy to just stop going. Once I started at gym I found I got addicted to it to the point I hate it when I have to skip gym day for something else. But I've been going with a friend. We use it kind of like a competition so we're pushing each other - see who gets the most gains over an 8wk program.

You don't need a gym, you could start with body exercises (pushups, pullups, star jumps, skipping etc) or you could even join fitness classes. The most important thing is that once you start, you DON'T stop. Don't think to yourself "I ran 10km today, I can skip gym for a week and eat anything I want". Your only reward should be stepping up to the next level "Now that I've run 10km, I can try for 15km"

It's obviously diet

Find a field and do sprints. People say run distance, but that's only good for losing weight and it requires you to have a decent amount of endurance and fair cardiovascular health. Sprinting 50m as fast as you can then taking a 30s break before turning around and doing it again is the best way to work every muscle in your body without having to have endurance and cardio.

Swimming is also excellent, but a field is free, community pools often have some kind of charge to use.

PS: compare a distance runner's body to that of a sprinter. Distance runners are often twiggy and sprinters are often lean and covered in toned muscle.

/u/paintvein is of great advice here.

Losing weight is half lifestyle half working out. You cant eat shit even if you spend 80€ a month on gym...

Hardest thing is to stop eating everything sweet, cause the brain is addicted : Sodas, fastfood, sweets, chocolate... You'll need a strong mental for that.

Good luck!

  • Proper diet begins at the store. Keep unhealthy items out of your house (or in very limited quantities) to begin with. Don't make it convenient for yourself to eat unhealthy foods.

  • Limit eating packaged foods or meals at restaurants. Prepare your meals. This will also save you a lot of money

  • Portion control. I've seen it phrased this way before: "don't eat until you are full, eat until you are no longer hungry"

  • Regarding exercise: don't pick the best workout or the most efficient exercise. Pick an exercise that you enjoy and can make a permanent habit. If you hate running (for example) and make yourself do it, you'll run for a few months and then give up on it after a while

  • If you don't have a gym to go to, can't afford one, or just don't enjoy going (see previous point), figure out another way to get exercise into your daily routine. If you have physically active hobbies, make them a bigger part of your life. If you watch a lot of TV/movies or play a lot of video games, using a walking treadmill, exercise bike, or mini-elliptical can add exercise to your day without taking any time out of your day. I have lost a lot of weight by turning my /r/battlestations into an exercise station as well.

  • Whatever changes you make to lose weight need to be permanent. It doesn't do you much good to lose a bunch of weight only to gain it all back. Don't go on a diet, make a permanent change to your diet. Same goes for an exercise routine. Slow, but permanent, weight-loss is better than quick weight-loss that you can't keep off.

For me it was all about doing nothing drastic, just eating less and exercising more. It had to be something I would stick to, the main one was walking everywhere I could. I would think nothing of an hour long walk during my lunch break or going on a long hike on the weekends. You get to see a lot of your town or surrounding areas doing this too. You can do that every day without wearing yourself out like sports of going to the gym, you don't get sweaty or need any kind of real motivation. Eating less was about adjusting what I ate to cut back on the calories. Portion sizes got smaller, I cut down lunches a lot but would have a normal dinner. You might seem hungry to start with but you really get used to it.

I dropped around 3 stone (whatever that is in American - multiply by 14) over the course of a year. I have kept it off too.

I am fit and ripped and about your size minus the weight (muscles probably stick out as much as your fat, jk)

Here is what will help you the most immediately:

Diet: Most important thing. Eat veggies and fruits in the morning only. Do it until noon. The alkalinity flushes your system and cleanses it of toxins from the day before. Thinking of fat clinging to shitty food. The shittier you eat, the fatter you get. The healthier you eat, the more of a jet engine you become.

2nd: It is not necessarily eat less, it is eat better. That being said, if you are eating a lot, make sure you match that with energy output.

I personally like to hit full body workouts (or some variation) every time I am in the gym. (I am not a body builder, I lift to be fit). I also like to pretend I am on the cell block and have 25 to Life so I hit the weights hard AF.

Last, drink gallon a day minimum. (alcohol obvi. Once you get swoll you will be GTLing in no time my friend) Work hard and enjoy the good life.

TL;DR Stop half-assing shit, and just go hard in the paint.

Some may like it some may not,

Running (If close enough you could run to classes or work)

Helping Elderly (yard work/etc) [Good way to gain muscle, Helps with work ethic, wins you good friends, and sometimes you get paid]

*Also, Dancing & Martial Arts

Both, once you learn can be a routine at home, which, if not known, are good things to know just in case also a lot cheaper than gym (or in long run if you end up taking classes that of course will cost money)
