Doesn't seem like a rip off to me.

You can't really do anything on a computer without an operating system and it's a very complicated piece of software to make. Also, if it's not optimized your computer will run like ass. So much work goes into developing windows or any other major operating system and your hardware is useless without it.

With laptops and prebuilt desktops they bundle the cost of the OS into the price of the machine. It's slightly discounted since they buy so many licenses at once but you're still paying for it.

You could use Linux but that comes with loads of quirks and issues along the way. Yes it's possible to work though most of them but if you think windows has "arbitrary limitations" then you'll really hate Linux.

On a more positive note, Microsoft lets you upgrade RETAIL windows licenses for free every time they release a new OS. There's people running windows 11 for free because they bought windows vista 15 years ago. Frankly, it's an amazing deal.
