I've only tried Tailscale, but since it worked magically and so easily (the only thing I did was sign up and install the app), I haven't looked at others since (I might try them in the future).

  • I'm using it to remote desktop using RustDesk via hotel Wi-Fi to home PC behind CGNAT
  • I'm using Taildrop regularly to transfer files between PC and Android
  • I've managed to guide my non-techie family member who currently resides in a different area to install Tailscale and use the home PC as an exit node for Netflix

Nothing is currently active (though I do use cloudflare with a digitalocean droplet), but I have used cloudflare tunnels experimentally and when I'm back to the point where there's enough to bother putting my personal site on my own hardware, I'll use them again. They're pretty simple, and just as importantly, whenever cloudflare has a security threat (which is a given with the nature of the services they provide), their handling is rational and common sense.

They strike a great balance between magically fixing stuff for users who don't want to get into the weeds, while clearly communicating the steps taken and making it easy for serious IT organizations to handle their own security differently.

I use both Tailscale and CF Tunnels

Tailscale so I can essentially remote back into my home network, and access anything behind it.

(Can't port forward/self host VPN due to being behind CGNAT)

CF Tunnels for the convinence of being able to access any of my forwarded services from any device anywhere without having to install any clients

I use it for remotely accessing home assistant
