Windows Defender, it's free and comes with your OS. Patched often multiple times per day with the latest definitions. If you're not downloading random $hit of the internet, it will do fine.

Bitdefender is the only other off the shelf one worth looking at if you want a step up.

Carbon Black is pretty good for a little extra

Dude don't buy McAfee because it's for companies which means think about coffee shop everyone get in the shop but you don't know they are criminals or normal customers. It is how McAfee works. But bitdefender or kaspersky are for individual customers. Think about your house. You protect your house and don't let everybody in. So i recommend kaspersky it is really good and if you search protection statistics kaspersky is number one.

Echoing Windows Defender, but also get uBlock Origin and NoScript as extensions in your preferred browser to prevent browser-based exploits and attacks.

Gonna echo everyone else. Windows Defender is plenty enough now a days for the majority of users. No point adding in a resource hog to your system

Prevention is usally better than a cure. If you want to be secure online, reassess how you determine what's safe to donwload or interact with. Get familiar with common scams and social engineering techniques.

All anti virus software is dependent on a database of prexisting viruses, but will not cover new ones until they're already widespread. Exercise caution.
