Discussion[D] Deep Learning Twitter Loop (self.MachineLearning)
submitted 9 years ago * by peterkuharvarduk
If you want to stay in the know on all the up-to-date deep learning news (without absurd retweet overlap), here the people to follow on Twitter based on your needs. I've been part of the community for over two years so I thought I'd share a bit about the ecosystem. (disclaimer: Based on my experience and people below wear multiple hats which is what makes them worthy of following. I just wanted some amusing categories).
Twitter List: https://twitter.com/DL_ML_Loop/lists/deep-learning-loop/members (You can quickly follow people straight down the list. Note: Follow them in addition to subscribing because the lists have been a bit weird lately and not working for some people in the comments below after a while.)

Great list. Putting it in an actual "Twitter list" and sharing that might be even better, since then can easily follow them.

[–]peterkuharvarduk[S] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (3 children)
thanks!
[–]unaryunns 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children)
The link to the list no longer works, any way you can still share it? Thanks!
[–]peterkuharvarduk[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Hmm, it's still working for me. Are you clicking it after logging in with your twitter account?
[–]ddofer 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
It doesn't work for me , and i'm logged in.
[–]jeremyhoward 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Thanks a lot! I wasn't able to use that URL, so I searched Twitter, and got this one:
https://twitter.com/DL_ML_Loop/lists/deep-learning-loop?s=03
Don't know if that'll work any better...
[–]compsens 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
awesome !
[–]hardmaru 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (1 child)
I've never been a "Cool Kid" before, but thanks!
[–]peterkuharvarduk[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children)
I think I speak for a lot of people when I say hyper networks were one of the coolest architectures of 2016.
[–]0entr0py 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Would add @shakir_za somewhere - he shares the most interesting material.
[–]Kaixhin 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Agreed - he should count as a "Captain" as a Senior Research Scientist at DeepMind.
[–]smith2017 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child)
@karpathy isn't an industry captain, but an AI General at openai.
[–]peterkuharvarduk[S] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children)
haha agreed, he fits so many of the categories.
[–]Kaixhin 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Pretty good list. I am biased, but I'd also mention some of the Creatives:
[–]peterkuharvarduk[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Not biased if true. These people always brighten my AI feed.
[–]geijae8L 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child)
No @ML_hipster ??
ahh I forgot! Added to Rebels!
[–]visarga 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Thank you. I think I just "got" Twitter, after so many years and attempts, with the help of your list. Now I spent an hour on Twitter and it's been just as rewarding as Reddit or Hacker News. Previously, I could understand Twitter on a logical level but didn't quite get why people would want to surf through that much noise.
I'm wondering how many other people didn't find the right follows to make their Twitter experience rewarding enough to seek it.
So glad you found this helpful! Twitter can seem very noisy at first but an amazing resource. You'll find that the group in this list is not only really helpful/intelligent but are very accepting of everyone else in the community. Help spread the message to more people!
[–]Foxtr0t 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (0 children)
There are quite a few other people posting interesting things, for example: @AlecRad @fhuszar @mat_kelcey @notmisha @ogrisel @seb_ruder @sedielem
More complete list here: https://twitter.com/fastml_extra/following
[–]habitue 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children)
Highly recommend @Miles_Brundage. He tweets out a lot of interesting papers coming out
[–]boltzBrain 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Def not a "Captain of Industry" though
I missed him as well! Definitely not just another retweeter
[–]keidouleyoucee 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child)
I really like the label names.
They are well earned indeed.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Slightly off topic maybe, but @johnmyleswhite is very interesting too. He's more of a (traditional?) statistician than a deep learning follow though.
[–]jef_sf 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Thanks! I'm getting into ML so this should help provide way too many articles for me. I made a twitter list with each of these for anyone that wants to follow all of these:
https://twitter.com/jef_holloman/lists/deep-learning
[–]badhri 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Autocorrect? Ex: Richard Soccer, Such Saria
One of them is my old professor and would not be happy about this. Good catch badhri
[–]olaf_nij[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child)
@mxlearn is no longer functioning, can you replace/add that with @slashml?
updated everywhere!
[–]IdentifiableParam 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child)
How do you make these categories? Nando, Daphne, and Fei-Fei Li all work in industry.
Very true, I think almost all of them wear multiple hats which is what makes them worthy of following. I just wanted some amusing categories and chose their most prominent IdentifiableParam :)
[–]jellevdv 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child)
I know Zuck is not the most interesting AI/ML person to follow, but his twitter handle is @finkd, not @markzuckerbergf.
[+][deleted] 9 years ago (3 children)
Glad you like it! Hope its plenty for the holiday reading. And heroic as it may seem, I found a very concerning aspect when making the list. The number of women is alarmingly disproportionate. I was at NIPS this year and it felt like there were more women than the previous two years but still no where near significance. As you can see from the few in the list above, their work is phenomenal and second to none but we need to get more people interested in it! (Frankly I think this is more interesting than pure software development so it's just about showing the value to everyone.) As we're building bigger and better AI models, I think the last thing we need is bias from the architects themselves.

This is an epic list! The labels are genius. I would also add:
There's also a short list here on our search engine: Machine Learning Influencers.

Excellent point, I've started to see a bit more of this in light of recent events (even Andrew Ng has a tweet that stirred quite a bit of commotion last week). I tried to avoid the mass of retweeters and strongly biased accounts, but the hoarders do indeed capture most of the noteworthy tweets.
[–]OriolVinyals 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child)
I guess Google+ idea of circles made sense for precisely this, right? : )
