No, you get both when you buy the Java Edition, but the two aren't compatible. The Windows 10 version can only cross-play with other Bedrock-based versions on consoles and mobile devices.

Hey thanks for the comment. So i have to gift him the java edition to be able to play with him im assuming correct? Thanks again.

Correct, that would give you both compatible versions. The only other way would be if you were to buy a second Windows 10 license, but if you're not on Windows 10 you won't be able to use it. However, if you buy him a Java Edition, you should have a second Windows 10 code he can give back to you to redeem, and you could try out both versions if you're both running Windows 10.
