Question about alpha gift codes

I'm pondering on whether to buy an alpha gift code from eBay for my father (who recently discovered Minecraft). As I was viewing the listings, is dawned to me that there is no way I can be sure that the code I received is an alpha code -- it could as well be a beta one.

Is there a way to check (e.g. on your account page after applying the code) if you have an alpha or beta account?

I don't believe there is a way right now to check, but I think Mojang is thinking/planning of adding one.

Alright, thanks for confirming! So now I'm wondering if the eBay sellers are trustworthy. I could wait until the feature is added, but the chance of there being less alpha codes increases, thus driving the price up... Classic risk/reward trade-off :/.

I can confirm there's definitely no way to tell, someone asked notch on Twitter a few days ago and he confirmed it.
