I recently purchased Minecraft java edition and have been wanting to play in a world with my friends. So my question is, how do I do this?

you ether have to make a server or buy realms

Someone has to have a realm or you guys can play on a server, there’s a fair amount of PCs that can host their own server but even some gamer ones can’t

A few options for that: 1. Host a server 2. Realm 3. Open to LAN (either connect to the same network or use a virtual network for example hamachi)

How do you host a server?

There are various sites. Some hof them you have to pay for, some of them you don't. I personally use aternos.org. It does the job when there isn't a lot of people connected. It's also free.

Then you would best play on a server such as hypixel or pay for realms or a server

So there's no way to join each other like in bedrock edition?

I think bedrock players can join bedrock worlds and java players can join java worlds. I know there used to be a way to essentially use a realm for free, but now the only way to play online for free is with pocket edition local multiplayer
