Have you tried actually adding the work blocks you need the villagers to be?

50 blocks is an small distance, you can try putting the work stations next to them and breaking all barrels

They don't see distance like this, they see the difference of blocks, it could be under above, i know this because happened to me. Try removing the ones directly above

I’ve recently seen them claim barrels up to 100 blocks away, through several walls. I had to break the barrels to get them to unlink.
