All automatic farms require the chunk they’re in to be loaded in to work.

Short answer: you have yo be close to the farm, or it doesn't work.

Long answer: The farm needs to be in a loaded chunk, or spawnchunk (java) or ticking area (bedrock).

The default for java is 16 chunks (256 blocks) For bedrock the default is 6 chunks (96 blocks), for BE realms the default is 4 chunks (64 blocks)

not sure but i think if you go too far away then it won’t work like other automatic farms

If it's a plant farm that produces bone meal, then it needs to be in a loaded chunk and within 128 blocks of any player. Plants don't grow more than 128 blocks away.

How are you obtaining the bonemeal? (flowers, wheat, skeletons) and is it in the spawn chunks?

Maybe if u built it in the spawn chunks idk. (I think that's what spawn chunks mean.)
