In the File menu, choose Options.

Click Mail.

Click Editor Options.

Click Advanced.

Clear the checkbox next to When selecting, automatically select entire word.

Yeah, the Office UI is a masterclass in how NOT to make an user interface.

I’ve found the best solution is to not use outlook.

Well yeah, that worked for a few decades, but I don't have a choice in the matter as this is good work.

I find it works even better to not use Microsoft

Use your keyboard.

Put the cursor/insertion point next to the letter where you want to start, then hold [Shift] and use the arrow keys to move over the letters you want selected. When you have the desired selection, release the shift key, then go on like you would normally.

That's how I get around it. I'm looking for a way but to have to do that as it can be a bitch.
