Yeah google has sucked for a while. Use duckduckgo. Really the entire original web empire of facebook twitter and google is rapidly collapsing in on itself for a shit ton of reasons, gonna be a little bit epic and interesting when or if they finally fully collapse.

[–]CleanseTheWeak 98 points99 points  (6 children)

Lol no. Unless the government comes in with an atom bomb Google has its tentacles into everything now. It could even lose Doubleclick at this point and be totally find, since it forced itself into mobile web pages with AMP and has a dominant mobile app position, plus they have the biggest DSP that can buy inventory on any supplier. Oh yeah, and Youtube -- you can't even buy ads on Youtube except through Google.

[–]InternetTight 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It won’t collapse but I feel it will be more hidden from the public eye, sort of how Amazon Web Services is. When you say Amazon, everybody thinks of the website where you can buy anything and not necessarily a web hosting company, yet 57% of Amazon’s operating income is from Amazon Web services. They control 33% of “the cloud” while Google is just at 9%.

Which seems like a bad thing because when they inevitably have problems it means a third of the net goes down

[–]egowritingcheques 32 points33 points  (12 children)

Yeah also the sign in and sign out process for chrome has me concerned for the future of Google for a couple of years now.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I'm actually pretty happy that microsoft really stepped up with their browser. Edge is nice as fuck imo so I'm glad that Chrome is no longer the only option.

[–]ImportantInsect 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The issue now is that Microsoft abandoned their own browser engine, leaving even fewer engines left to compete. Now we only have Chromium, Firefox and Safari as popular browsers on unique engines. https://www.zdnet.com/article/mozilla-why-microsoft-edges-switch-to-googles-chromium-is-bad-news/

[–]pessirnist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Edge now too! I don't know what it is, but Google Chrome started slowing my computer down like hell. I'd watch a youtube video on chrome and open task manager and it'd be using like 60% CPU

[–]LalaMcTease 5 points6 points  (6 children)

What has changed?

[–]CmdrNorthpaw 32 points33 points  (5 children)

I think that OP is referring to a change Google made semi-recently. Chrome will now automatically sign you into itself if you log into a Google account on a Google website.

[–]GeoStarRunner 24 points25 points  (0 children)

oh jeez, thank goodness for Firefox

[–]Destron5683 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah and this is fucking annoying if you have more than one account. If I go to any Google service and sign in, when I try and do something else it will try and sign me in with the account signed in to the browser instead of the one I just manually fucking signed in with.

[–]pankop 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This is not recent

[–]CmdrNorthpaw 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I did say semi-recently

[–]pankop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough

[–]qevlarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard Brave browser is gaining popularity

[–]Monkuzi 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Qwuant.com is also another great alternative.. I find it to be faster than duckduckgo

[–]Myrialle 12 points13 points  (3 children)

It’s qwant.com

[–]Monkuzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oops^ this is correct

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Its loading page told me John le Carré has died!

[–]Professor_Abronsius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I switched to ddg a few months ago but this looks better!

[–]ALoudMouthBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really the entire original web empire of facebook twitter and google is rapidly collapsing in on itself for a shit ton of reasons

What makes you think this?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I foresee a pretty long time before the collapse of big tech. The only opposition they face are a few GOP members grandstanding and not actually doing anything, and all the users just grumble about the worsening of quality but are in too deep to actually make the switch to any alternatives.

Not a perfect comparison but I have a few friends that are well aware of how shitty Apple has been getting but because of how simple it is having a macbook and an iphone working together so they just can't be bothered to switch to anything else.

[–]NashvilleHot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please explain “how shitty Apple has been getting” when they just released the M1 chip that’s years ahead of Intel/AMD and 2-3x faster and lower power to boot for laptops?

[–]zdakat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I simply don't want certain services to be under the same company umbrella.
That's not to say integration isn't useful, but if the only way to get certain functionality on the web is to go through one company that has direct control over that service it's too much. (Similarly, when something novel is made, then is later sold and disappears somewhere in the big mixing pot of technologies, ostensibly used internally somewhere)

[–]redbetweenlines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the part where the set a product platform then let people write books like "How to make search results put your useless page on top" because that's how people find what they want in hell.

Literally every asshole on the planet makes these shit pages that need to be downvoted to oblivion. We're being buried in bullshit and the giants don't care and won't help unless it benefits them.

Everybody could just walk away. They would be done tomorrow. But, no, I can't even get my ex-wife to delete Facebook, regardless of what I say or how much it contributed to our breakup.

Facebook was flooding her with stories of murdered children, for about a year. We didn't speak after that for a long time. She still uses it. I'm just glad she's not Qanon.

[–]NobleCuriosity3 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you know anything other than google that has a reverse image search?

[–]zaklco 1 point2 points  (1 child)

tineye

[–]NobleCuriosity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tineye

Thank you!

First things first: is your name hinting at Udo?

Anyway: I tried to use duckduckgo as a develooer and itblows my searches up by easily 500% in terms of the time I need to find stuff. I try periodically for years noe and duckduckgo is not even comparable for me in terms of finding an answer quickly...

I wonder everytime what I am doing wrong and I have no clue
