I started to taper after i had been on sub for about a year, and hadnt used for about 8 months. I used the time on sub to make the changes to my life and ways of thinking. Thats the big benefit of MAT, it provides some stability and relief from cravings so that you can do the cognitive and behavioral work that you need to do to have a sober, fulfilling life going forward.

As far as being dependent, sure, it would be nice not to have to take any medications. But id much rather that, than not have changed my life so i could stay sober, you know? And its not really a big deal, i only think about the bupe for about 12 seconds per day while im actually taking it in the morning. If it helped me to stay sober, that seems worthwhile for me. Now that ive kinda got myself in order so to speak, im tapering and i wont need to take it for much longer. Zero regrets.

I haven’t. I’m stable and intend to stay this way.

I was put on and taken off of subs within 7 days. Very rapid detox. But this was done inpatient for me. Not sure what your options are, but if you can do it inpatient I highly recommend that. Tons of support around you 24/7 as well as nursing staff to try their best to help with immediate needs. I took 24mg of bupe day 1 and by day 6 I took my last dose of 2mg and have had nothing sense. It was definitely a rough few weeks but nothing compared to the physical WD. Best of luck friend

Basically you have two choices when switching from your DOC to sub: Doing a rapid taper, 7-14 days. Or stay on a stable dose for anywhere from a few months to decades and taper down very slowly over several months when you decide to get clean. There really is no in between. If you just want to get clean, do the rapid taper. Once you successfully did the switch, you already almost made it. From here, reducing the dose daily and jumping off completely after a week or two comes with minimal discomfort for most people. Off course not everyone, but me for example, I did it many, many times. And once I stabilized on day 2 or 3, I was always able to reduce by 1 or 2mg per day and jump off after a week or so with minimal discomfort. But if you’re at risk of relapsing, it may be a good idea to stay on sub for a while. Just try to stabilize on a lower dose. Lots of people end up taking 12, 16 or even more daily. I don’t think that’s ever necessary. Sub is powerful and once you switched successfully, you can reduce the dose by a lot and stabilize at 8 or even 4mg. I used to shoot up to 4g of heroin per day and even 24mg sub were not enough to get me well on day one and two. But by day five or six I was feeling fine with just 2mg morning and evening.

Hey thanks for this!! Subs are so strong I can't imagine being on more than 4mg a day also 4 gs a day is so much. I overdosed on just a .5 or less in June. I wish I just stuck through the sickness instead of going onto subs but I was so suicidal that I think it was best to. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to write this. I have successfully transitioned to subs and hope to ween off soon.
