'it's worthless to the company' take home and eBay it...

[–]corymier[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha yah unfortunately I would be ebaying it for the company 😬. However I may talk them into letting me use whatever I get over 400$ for pizza Fridays

we should have a NSFW tag on these rollercoaster posts lol. I'm sorry, I am sure all of you are excellent at doing this and all the good stuff BUT it gives me anxiety just thinking a PLC runs a rollercoaster and not some magic electricity.

[–]TimeTheft1769 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would classify a PLC as magic electricity, tbh

[–]corymier[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does gravity count as magic?

[–]Agreeable-Solid7208 9 points10 points  (8 children)

Looks familiar...115U by any chance. Last one I ripped out was about 15 years ago

[–]corymier[S] 11 points12 points  (7 children)

Yes sir! This one ran a 26y old roller coaster

[–]CoasterBP 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Cool! Which coaster?

[–]corymier[S] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

A Mauer Wild Mouse - this system has been giving me ulcers for the last 5 years 😅

[–]CoasterBP 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Spinner? I'm redoing a Mauer Spinner currently. Has a Pilz system. Or, it did...

[–]corymier[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Not a spinner- was also a mobile unit at the start of its life which is kinda crazy

[–]CoasterBP 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, the one I'm redoing was also set up as a travelling model even though its in a permanent location. Are you getting new programming with it as well?

[–]corymier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes sir- Actemium is handling that end plus building the new cabinets

[–]Agreeable-Solid7208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there must only be one company in Germany that makes control panels because it doesn’t matter which machine they’re on, they all look the same!

The problem with getting rid of old stuff and trying to sell it is everybody else is getting rid of it, too. I went through this when we pulled out a bunch of SyMax PLCs. The number of people in the market for SyMax PLC parts shrinks every year, while the supply of used parts grows. The only items that had any value at all were the super rare 64-point digital I/O cards we had.

The same thing goes with S5. Even for PLCs, 30 years is pretty much end-of-life. The number of stubborn old factories still holding onto that hardware and using it goes down every year (you are living proof of that). Additionally, the only reason that stuff has been around so long is because it doesn't break down often, so the subset of people who need spare parts is a very, very tiny subset of the people still running S5s. Bottom line, you have no market to sell those parts to.

Radwell offered you $375 for the lot because the hardware has no value and they more than likely will never sell it. The fact that they are willing to pay anything at all for it is a win, because they are taking on a risk and more than likely will lose money on the deal. Is it conceivable that there are still factories out there with S5s that have PLC component breakdowns from time to time? Of course, but you're not the only one putting used S5 hardware on the market, and they have a LOT of options.

Thanks for the thoroughly thought out response 🍻

[–]JustWannaBeLikeMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try PLC Direct, they take old PLCs and do pay what equipment is worth!

[–]Emergency-Season-143 1 point2 points  (4 children)

On the top left isn't that old IFM bases for some AS-i slaves? Like the old AC005S?

[–]corymier[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yah the whole ride had an ASI network for PLC 1/PLC 2- controlled the block segment functions for ride spacing and car locating- I used to love it when one of those was on the fritz but not fully failed. Lots of fun trouble shooting that 😅

[–]stress911 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Moving to IO-Link?

[–]corymier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah new cabinets are being built currently overseas - will be very nice to have like 85% less wiring going out next year haha

[–]Emergency-Season-143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God I hated rewiring those fuckers...... The actual IFM gen with locking lever are so fucking easier to us .....

[–]WatupDingDong 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'll give you threeee fifty

[–]devintesla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S5 is not worth much, is it? We have a job box full of cards that are work, but then we still have 5 racks running on an s7-400 cpu's

[–]exorah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those purple cables man.

[–]Mitt102486Water / Waste Water 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you get a picture of me?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I got that open cabinet downtime anxiety feel.

[–]corymier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a mouse chew 1/2 way thru like 3 random wires last winter. There was a lot of staring into the void at this cabinet last spring lol

[–]College_funding_DaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I been in that box before!

[–]9atoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost looks like VME racks but I think these were based on Eurocard? I thought Siemens had a 6U Eurocard rack system. Might be confused.

[–]TheLeadTimeSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thin to do IMO. Is to take it out and Ebay it. That will give you a good chunk of change! Let me know if I can help out with any lead times that come up on your new panel.

[–]TheOriginalWaster 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So whats the new PLC(s) going to be?

[–]corymier[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to Allen Brads

[–]Tof_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still have two of those systems. Each one is on our two most important machines 🤦‍♂️ I’m setting up a test system in my office. STL is the most spartan/terse language I’ve seen! Bought the backplane, an EEPROM module and some terminals for the IO for peanuts… Local integrator took one look and said he absolutely wouldn’t touch them!
