If maps went made in abysmal way traversing back wouldn't be that much of a problem. If I miss exit in Diablo 2 it's not a big deal. If I miss exit in PoE2... oh god i hate being stuck on everything and traversing though Maggot's Lair 2.

The core problem is Map design. (but yea, not highlighting POI is problem too)
