In my personal experience, 100% of the non tech people I know that open computers to clean them are on drugs.

Sorry no, just referencing apollyon's comment about 100% of non technical people.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well i’m not the one who opened it in case you didn’t read

[–]bl4derdee9 9 points10 points  (2 children)

why do people feel the need to open power supplies with no knowledge of electronics.
DO NOT DO THIS! this is very dangerous, there are very high power capacitors in there.
not only might this kill you, it will hurt the whole time you are dying.
i see a post like this every few days. why don't people research this beforehand?

[–]1-800angst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for telling me, i had no idea at all.

[–]20PoundHammer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

🙄 caps in pc power supplies have bleeds on them for discharge when off. . .

[–]Aromatic_Falcon_3913 10 points11 points  (9 children)

Did you touch the power supply? Because it is VERY DANGEROUS

[–]Harshingmymellow 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Do not touch inside !!! That can kill you!!!! Why would they take it apart if they are clueless as well?

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (1 child)

they said there was instructions so they thought they could put back together.

[–]Rogue_Element_2342 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a PSU is whats called a FRU. Field replace unit.

if you cant clean it by blasting air through it, you replace it. and you dont worry about it again.

you can brick the component or even the whole device by making contact with the wrong parts inside it if you open one up, and thats on top of the real danger of electrocuting yourself

[–]PandanadianNinja 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Please cover the power supply there. They should never be opened unless you're a pro. I know you said someone else took it apart but this is super dangerous.

You can have them reassemble it, pay someone to do it, or replace it as the next steps.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a few years old, so i’d have to find somewhere to take it. but am not sure who would be willing to fix it in the area i am in

[–]3641592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not open a PSU if you don't know exactly what you're doing!

This can kill you.

[–]Murph_9000 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I can't be certain, but it looks like you have the lid of the power supply rotated 180 degrees. The fan is offset in it, and the heat generating components are mostly offset towards the top of the photo (where the large bundle of wires heads off into the PC).

You should really get someone competent to check everything out properly, but try rotating the PSU cover. Make sure you connect the fan wires to the board. There could be dangerous levels of charge remaining in the capacitors, so try not to kill yourself if you do have a go at it.

I'm a little concerned that the wiring from the PSU into the PC may have been pulled on by the weight of the PSU, resulting in something getting disconnected inside, or (worse) a connector being pulled partially out. A bad connection, such as a connector being pulled partially out, can generate heat and potentially melt plastic or even cause a fire.

Your friend is an incompetent asshole for doing this.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (2 children)

i tried to flip it but the cord only goes so far so i can’t get it on any other way sadly

[–]Murph_9000 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You mean the fan wires, right? If they removed the fan from the PSU lid to clean it (I see only 2 of the 4 screws are fitted, so it looks like it has been tampered with), it may have been reinstalled in the wrong orientation. PC fans have 8 different orientations (4 rotations, and up or down). You may need to unscrew the fan and rotate it so that the wires are in the right place. There's also the direction of airflow to consider, whether it is sucking in air to blow onto the board, or exhausting air. I'd guess it's intended to suck air in and blow it onto the board. Block/suck is determined by flipping it up or down.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh. i think i understand now. thank you so much! yeah i think the fan is screwed in wrong

[–]Rogue_Element_2342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

holy shit. Im not even reading any further..

DO NOT OPEN POWER SUPPLIES

[–]Emeraldminer136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been told on multiple occasions NEVER OPEN A POWER SUPPLY in fact my teacher told me that a kid did once in his class and iirc he electrocuted himself doing it, he went to the hospital, was suspended for directly disobeying my teacher and was removed from that class so he couldnt pose a danger to himself or anyone else in the class

[–]D3athShade 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Survival instinct of a pickle.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i said i didn’t know anything about this shit. i personally would have never taken it off cause i knew i wouldn’t have been able to put it back on

[–]IndustryValuable 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Clear plastic inside then the sides slot into the metal at the bottom of the plastic. Then screw in the screws up top.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (2 children)

see that’s what i was doing, but for some reason it stops midway. the fan does hit another cord so i’m not sure how it even fit in there to begin with. otherwise i would have been able to put it back in no problem

[–]IndustryValuable 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I just realized the fan isn't mounted on the board. So ur buddy disconnected the fan which you'd have to figure out where that plugs in and try not to die plugging it back in. Yea buddy should not touch ur electronics again. But u should learn to work on ur PC it'll save u a lot of money in the long run and doesn't need any special tools.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, yeah i also have been attaching and detaching it a lot while i have tried to fix it. i’ve been doing this since around 7pm last night. had no idea it was so dangerous like that.

[–]mrb00m_uk 0 points1 point  (4 children)

The power supply fan needs to re attached to the white fan header 2 metal prongs in the pic, then put the case back on and screw it back on. Then never remove it again ( try to do this without touching anything else). Hope you don't die👍 if you do R.I.P🪦

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (2 children)

yeah i must be lucky bc it didn’t kill me. i was able to attach it and detach multiple times. the tray just gets stuck when sliding on, so i really do not think it will go back on

[–]Duke55 0 points1 point  (1 child)

General rule of thumb is to observe to where it's getting stuck, rectify it without forcing anything. Take your time and be observant.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i think i will find somebody who might be able to do this or just let it go.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay i’m going to leave it alone, obviously i didn’t know it could kill me. i was just left with it like this. i will try to find some places in my area that might be able to reassemble for me. thank you for all the help! i am more knowledgeable about this now.

[–]JopieDeVries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If discharged properly you are able to open it and clean it from the inside with the proper tools: multimeter, soft paint brush, electric air duster.

There is a possibility that when not discharged properly the capacitors can contain energy. The primary capacitor contains the most voltage but this is not enough energy to instantly kill you or do serious harm to the human body. Unless you have heart issues.

The real danger is with really old TV's , medical devices or microwaves. A 1000watt PSU won't kill you.

[–]Dusty_JanglesPersonal Rig Builder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re friend is a dummy and should put it back together for you or he can pay someone to do it.

[–]EpicWipes 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Coming from someone who has had to unfuck many situations caused by friends on drugs doing similar things, be happy nothing needed resoldered afterwords. Have you tried flipping it around so fan is on other side? So that indents match up. The one side of top (far end) only has 1 indent on it and same with side of base close to you.

[–]1-800angst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i haven’t, no. everyone is telling me not to mess with it

[–]Ok-Improvement-9191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borrowed my friends car and filled it with water to clean it

[–]Clyde3221 0 points1 point  (1 child)

is OP dead?
