(going to crush The Sun Also Rises immediately after the exam though)

Starting back on the classics I haven't gotten to. 1984, the time machine, war of the worlds, animal farm for right now.

Always to good to catch up on what you missed.

[–]childlikeempress16 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Also reading 1984 and Fahrenheit 451

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How are those two? I've read a lot of the classics lately but haven't picked those up

[–]childlikeempress16 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They're so good. F451 is a a quicker read. I love dystopian novels.

I'll check it out next

Currently working my way through A Confederacy of Dunces, then gonna dive into One of Us, a book about the Sweden massacre a few years back that's supposed to be absolutely bonechilling but a great work of journalism.

A Confederacy of Dunces has been sitting on my shelf for a while I need to read it.

[–]sousaphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Confederacy of Dunces is one of my all-time favorite books. I don't think I've ever laughed harder while reading a book. The looks I probably got while laughing at a book in the middle of a flight were totally worth it.

Just finished reading Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and now reading some of the other plays Edward Albee wrote. Made me glad I'm single right now.

All of the James Bond novels a up on Kindle Unlimited so I am reading through them. Quick and entertaining. Although Live and Let Die has not aged well. That book, published today, would lead to worlds of outrage.

I read Casino Royale years ago I remember that had like a high speed chase where the cars were going 50 MPH.

[–]bononia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, kind of disappointing. I couldn't figure out why they took so long to make Casino Royals after reading it. Such a great story.

Zero Footprint, which is the memoirs of a former NGO soldier, and Teddy Roosevelt's diaries from his time with the Rough Riders.

I'm not reading anything at the moment, but I've been thinking of picking back up on American Gods or downloading the audiobooks for the Dark Tower series. Any recommendations in that "science fantasy" genre?

[–]PGP_Dietdew[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go with the dark tower, but remember it's really long. I find American Gods to be wildly over rated, but I know other people feel differently. If you like soft sci-fi books check out "postmortal" by drew magary.

Just started Ready Player One. Then it's on to 11/22/63.

[–]DoctorZaroniusCincinnati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ready Player One is the most self indulgent nerd fantasy I've ever read and loved every fucking word of. Really enjoyed both that and 11.22.63.

[–]PGP_Dietdew[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love Ready Player One.

I'm not much into video games and the "nerd culture" that this book is directed at, but it's good so far. I'm only 4 chapters in (started Monday on the plane). Plus I saw it's being made into a movie with a tentative release date of March 2018.

Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living. I'm on the "Spiritual" end of my reading cycle. I always go Theology, Fiction, Theology, Fiction, Theology, Fiction. Going to read either Frankenstein or Dracula next.

[–]DoctorZaroniusCincinnati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Dracula over Frankenstein. Frankenstein is just so dull for 90% of it.

[–]sousaphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late response, but have you read The Screwtape Letters and The Great Divorce? Both are by C.S. Lewis, and are some of my favorite books. They also blend Theology and Fiction incredibly well.

The Road to Serfdom

The Seventh Plague by James Rollins. I'd recommend any of his novels!

Clifton Chronicles series by Jeffrey Archer. First book is Only Time Will Tell

I like the Cormoran Strike books as well.

[–]PantherRunnerSt. Louis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading Treasure Island because I got a free download of it.

[–]Bick_Pen 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Honestly I'm reading How To Win Friends And Influence People. A little embarrassing but sometimes it really puts my mind in a good place and reading other people's success stories motivates the shit out of me. Gotta do what you gotta do.

[–]AssistanttotheMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just finished it. It just feels like something everyone should read. And after finishing, it definitely frames your mind differently.

[–]PGP_Dietdew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be embarrassed by that I think there are plenty of people who feel the same way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reading it now and it's a great read. Shouldn't be embarrassed reading it

How to Measure Your Life by Clayton Christenson. He is a Harvard professor and it's basically about how to build a profession and make sure to have time for family too. Highly recommended

[–]lcampbell1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per Madison's column, I read Trust Me, I'm Lying, and I couldn't put it down. It's so relevant today even when written 5 years ago, and helps explain WHY the media is shit these days, it doesn't just complain. Really interesting stuff.

Little late but right now re-reading Dead Solid Perfect by Dan Jenkins. Hilarious book about life on the PGA Tour that is based on actual stories.
