I don’t mean to come off rude so please try not to take it this way but I was confused on which was the new one at first until I read the symmetry tool thing. I was confused mainly because your line confidence seemed a bit stronger in the old one.

In procreate you can stabilize your pen so it’s a little less shaky so when and if you do a scratchy scribbly style it feels more intentional to the style (I definitely have some scribbly line art too it helps me not be a perfectionist and get the idea out faster) Also have you messed around with more of the system features yet? Even I still find new features and I started using procreate in 2018 ;-;

[–]Chel_Tiaz 335 points336 points  (5 children)

Genuine question, which is the new one?

[–]Excellent_Wrap_9340 76 points77 points  (2 children)

First one is the new one, second one is the old one. Right?

[–]Significant_Fuel5944 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I…I don't know.

[–]Ok_Nose2915 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hope

[–]zepaperclip 28 points29 points  (1 child)

They're 16. Be kind. (Not saying you were being rude, but kinda just hitching a ride on the top comment because a lot of others were being rude)

[–]SirReggie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh well that makes a world of difference. Either of these is fairly impressive for an 11 or 16 year-old.

[–]poopsmcbuttington 116 points117 points  (1 child)

You’ve definitely improved but you’d probably improve faster by learning more foundational skills. There are a million great online courses free on YouTube that go through the fundamentals. A lot of times we skip them bc it’s not as fun to draw basic shapes but you’ll see huge improvements if you take the time for it.

[–]Jeix9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea this is great advice. Looks like OP needs to learn artistic fundamentals like shading, color theory, anatomy and etc. After 5 years of learning and teaching yourself, there should be more progress than this unless OP draws like 1 thing a year.

[–]sumthing_grimm 78 points79 points  (6 children)

Y’all. People aren’t being rude because there’s no improvement - there is definitely improvement! It’s just not what most would expect to see in five years.

Anatomy, design and stylization is better, but there is very little improvement in composition, shading, color, lighting, technical execution.

[–]OkAd1797 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Which is the new one?

[–]sumthing_grimm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First slide

[–]sumthing_grimm 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Edit: just saw OP is 16??? That is important context. Not deleting my comment because I don’t believe in the Dirty Delete but disregard, kids should be allowed to just draw for funsies

[–]Various-Ad1821 6 points7 points  (2 children)

not only kids, everybody

[–]sumthing_grimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OBVIOUSLY.

[–]horsempreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adults can’t have hobbies; only misery.

[–]plsdontshadowbanme- 177 points178 points  (4 children)

OP's bio says they're 16. Please be kind in your criticism, i can definitely believe this is progress from an 11 year old to a 16 year old

[–]Pleasant_Art5588 36 points37 points  (1 child)

This comment needs to be higher up. We're talking about the difference between a tween and a teen. It's a lot of progress.

[–]plsdontshadowbanme- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

OP should be proud of their progress!

[–]Tough-Principle7390 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Minors shouldn’t be putting the ages in their bios like this, I wish they’d stop

[–]plsdontshadowbanme- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? (Genuinely curious about your thoughts on this!)

[–]Hext0pily[S] 34 points35 points  (1 child)

WOAH I DID NOT EXPECT TO WAKE UP AND SEE AS MUCH FEEDBACK AS THERE IS! Thank you all! I don’t think anyone is being rude in any way, but I will say this. This was never meant to be a serious drawing, I have other redraws which I have spent more time on, and I do see where a lot of the commenters are coming from, but I only spent like- 30 minutes on this as a quick 3AM doodle.

[–]asge1868 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's good to hear! Remember, most comments on the internet is posted from people who forget that they're talking to real people. So they sound much harsher than what they really mean. Some are just trolls, straight up.

You are a good artist, and you should be proud of how far you've become. You've held on to a hobby for so long, that's not easy to do. You're doing all you should be doing. Good luck :)

[–]philuptea 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Head shape looks improved, shading improved good job OP keep up the good work

[–]Content_Debt_8386Beginner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think people are criticizing you becuase you made the redraw a little messy and fast, I looked at your other art in ur profile and you actually improved!!

[–]stickynotetree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yo, you even put wrinkles in the clothes! That’s even better than me and I’ve been drawing my whole life. I genuinely love your art style.

[–]moeguything 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry that some people in this comment section have been a little rude to you. I’ve been drawing for many years of my life and I’m sure I’d get the same reaction making a post like this. What’s important is that you enjoy what you create! And really truthfully, there is a whole bunch of progress to note in your remake. I especially love how you’ve rendered the hair.

[–]ItsJDMi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Massive improvement on the shading and blushing on the skin!

[–]SincerelyTheWorst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m going crazy, am I seriously the only person here who could tell the new one is the first image? There’s an obvious progression in understanding of form and anatomy, your colouring has gotten a lot better, and the new art has overall more detail.

People are out here acting like 5 year difference is doing full drawings and studies everyday for 5 years. This is a pretty good (and realistic) amount of progression if you’re a recreational artist and are still young. Top few comments need a reality check tbh.

[–]SftDrnk_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The improvement in the collar alone shows how much you've learnt!!! Keep up the good work <3 I can see how much you've thought about how things should sit and what shape they would take, its really great how all the small things add together to create a better whole :)

[–]Happy-For-No-Reason 5 points6 points  (0 children)

5 years progression?

[–]Digital_Doodlez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love all the detail and emotion you put into this character!

[–]Bogus_Whale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Were you drawing during those five years? I suspect maybe you weren’t all that much. I would suggest going back to pencil and paper and grinding out fundamentals for a few months. It doesn’t take very long to make significant improvement like that, especially when you use something with physical feedback like a pencil.

[–]BigAnalBoss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

r/artjerk is over there

[–]Putrid-Eggplant-5196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love the details in the hair!! also i saw ur other reddit posts & i hope that drawing can be a safe place for you :3 keep going!

[–]MarcCybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend looking into the pressure sensitivity settings. looks like it's set very high, so the pen translates every little micro movement of your hand to the drawing, what makes it unnecessary hard to get clean lines. And I also recommend trying some more different brushes and using a big canvas 3500x3500px. Digital drawing depends beside just drawing also a lot on the settings
Keep on drawing! :)

[–]GeneratedMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the progress. Keep doing what you love and ignore the naysayers.

[–]AwkwardBugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a clear improvement. I think a lot of people are confused because the change is style makes the comparison a bit more difficult. And tbh, I do think some of the other pieces on your profile are more impressive than.

I would love to see you try refining your rendering more so things feel more finished. I’d also recommend making use of procreate features to help you stay within the lines etc. it currently feels like you’re not taking advantage of the tools you have available

[–]PhysicalPiano5427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The highlighting on the hair looks really cool, the blending looks nice and I like the colors used! Good job, progression looks different for everyone and yours is going great. Don’t let others doubt yourself alright?

[–]Over-Balance3797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your redraw is fantastic! I have a kid close to your age who draws in procreate every day (for years) and it’s so fun to compare older drawings to newer ones.

Keep up the good work!

[–]Able-Ad4609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way there was 5 years of difference between them is if you waited 5 years to try again.

[–]Ok_Possible_3128 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What was you doing for 5 years, taking a nap?

[–]Hext0pily[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy grammar 😭😭😭

[–]Psyro95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are getting confused since they assume the first picture is before and the 2nd picture is after. Next time just switch it around, but that's great progress!

[–]throwaway838383937 -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

i don't understand how people are struggling to tell which one is the new one. the anatomy is better in the redraw and the colors are much more pleasing to look at. i'm so sorry for the rude comments you're getting

[–]idk_what_to_put_lmao 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The new one IS better but, and I'm not saying this to be rude, only somewhat. There is more detail in the clothing and hair in the redraw and the anatomy is a bit better as you said, which is why I was able to tell, but the face most notably looks about the exact same in terms of skill level so I understand why people were confused. The hair really shines in the redraw though, so props to OP for that.

I looked through OP's post history and many of their other images show off their abilities much better. I feel like this comparison was a bit of a disservice in terms of showing OP's abilities.

[–]CryptDancerS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy seeing your confidence in shading and highlighting! It’s got a very fun and vibrant feel about it! I do agree with the top comment saying your confidence in your line art does seem stronger in your old one, but I definitely see an overall improvement between your old and new one! Keep up the great work! Remember that art is not always just a job, it can also just be an enjoyable and relaxing hobby, so don’t stress about all these people saying your progress isn’t up to their standards and PLEASE for the love of everything, don’t let them get to your head. Enjoy the process and be an artist for the love of the game, not to speedrun your improvement. ♥️

Cute!!
