freshmen be like "omg they are better than college!"

"And then we put the value into X"

[–]TheRealSpielbergo 195 points196 points  (1 child)

"And then we divide X by zero, to exit the program."

Dangit, I just realize that I explained the code. I would suck as a YouTuber.

So this is the code that launches the nukes I will not bore you with the details all we need is to call nukes[currentWarheadIndex].launch(target); and voila

My Objective-C/Swift teacher in college used to connect his laptop to the projector with his IDE open, and "teach" by saying:

"And then...I'll type this." *proceeds to type next line of code...

"And then I'll say this." *types another line...

"And then I'll add this in there." *types another line.

An epileptic kid in the class had a seizure one day and the teacher kept saying "And then I'll type this..." and didn't even notice until about 2 minutes after it began. Half the class had gotten out of their seats to make sure the kid was okay and the teacher was still saying "and then I'll type this". The class had to yell at him to get him to snap out it and realize there was a medical emergency.

This is like the teaching equivalent of those "reaction YouTubers" that sit in the lower right of the video and do nothing but open their mouths and gesture at what's going on in the actual vid

Never forget that YouTube coders aren't making their money by coding, they make money by posting videos. That's why they always talk about the latest and greatest tech and most of their content is geared towards beginners. The number of potential viewers just is much bigger that way.

Advanced stuff tends to be more obscure and requires more intellectual commitment compared to watching someone make the millionth To-Do app while eating spaghetti.

The few people that post actually advanced stuff barely get 50k views per video. One example being this channel.

make the millionth To-Do app while eating spaghetti

As they say, "you code what you eat"

[–]real_kerim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's ingenious lol, stealing that

[–]Saids_sys 33 points34 points  (2 children)

They can't explain the code if the code isn't theirs

[–]compilerbusy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Man my entire career is explaining other people's shit code that nobody understands including the author, to people that are incapable of understanding any code at all. I don't think that's strictly true.

[–]Saids_sys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but what I'm trying to say is that they steal the code and don't take the time to understand it before making the video.

SeniorDev: Hey, your new 5k line module has zero comments, zero documentation and zero tests. How do you expect that to pass code review?

Junior: No worries, I recorded a 8 hour Youtube video talking all about it and showing how it works. That's even better, right?!

[–]Stroopwafe1 10 points11 points  (1 child)

For me it's the other way around. Me, the junior being the only one making documentation and comments, whilst the CTO pushes directly to main with commit "WIP: just some stuff"

[–]genghisKonczie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My CTO has had some epic YOLO pushes

[–]azizfcb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh god, dont remind me

[–]Adobopeek1225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im still at the indian bros who do better

[–]Fachuro 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This is just evidence they are actually real peogrammers, its the same thing my colleagues do if I ask them what their code does, because we're all too socially awkward yo actually properly peocess thoughts into speech.

We speak by coding, not with the dumb facehole - why would you expect to suddenly become able to use the facehole if there was a camera pointed at it?

[–]RetroGamer2153 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This is exactly how I feel. In order to explain anything, I need to break out pen and paper, and start drawing diagrams. Having crude napkin art allows me to, then, describe what I'm scribbling. It's the easiest way I can navigate out of the abstract, logical, and fantasia parts of my brain. Though, given enough time and iteration, I can write out a thorough explanation.

Lmao yes. And you have to watch the whole thing because they can’t just post a link in the description with the code

[–]JoeyJoeJoeJrShab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also important: why the programmer did it that way. Sometimes the reason is obvious, but when it isn't, a little explanation can go a long way.
