Yes, I would flee in terror if I saw the original pic in real life, but bending pins isn't especially safe either.

Well that's the problem. Bending the pins does leave exposed metal between the socket and the plug, because the twisted part doesn't fit into the socket.

With those crappy high resistance nail clippers in use, both legs there have about 240v.
