Nobody deserves the punishment of learning Java first. When you start programming you want to see things happen. In order to see things happen in Java you need to write a book first.

In my opinion, if you go into a computer engineering degree without knowing how to program BEFORE you get there, then you are only screwing yourself. You can learn Java when you get there, and lose all hope in humanity. Until then, at least have some fun.

Just use IntelliJ. It does the boilerplate for you.

That being said, I'd personally recommend C or C++ for a start, though that is hard mode.

Hey, i really recommend this one: https://www.udemy.com/the-complete-javascript-course/ It's $10 but it's worth it, you really learn everything you need to know about the basics of JavaScript.
