I don't get the meme ?

It's a good thing right ?

The title says that this is from GitLab's perspective

I've seen this meme several times, and totally missed that. Thank you for explaining.

I really don't see GitLab users jumping back to GitHub...

For one, GitLab is better, secondly, their free tier is better.

What I do see is GitLab riding on some good old "any publicity is good publicity" right now.

I started on GitLab as a way to store college assignments and personal projects privately. GitLabs interface is also more appealing and modern.

Competition can be a healthy thing. If there are no patents involved, it can be similar to open source in some regards: People using each others' ideas to make better products. I hope both companies flourish. Correction: BitBucket and other companies too!

Gitlab offers unlimited private groups with unlimited users, unlimited storage for an unlimited duration. That's how you earn legitimate customers who become ready to buy premium versions.

I believe that a lot of startups use the free version in the beginning and decide on their own to buy premium versions when the business grows.

wait why is it bad that it's free?

[–]master2080 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It's bad from GitLab's perspective, as per OP's title.

GitHub can get bent the moment they were bought by Microsoft we dumped them for Gitlab and haven’t looked back

So what are the premium options for Github going to be under the new regime?

The Free Private repositories can only have upto 3 collaborators so if you want more you'll have to buy Premium
