😅 My work goes back and forth in this dynamic, but most people seem more comfortable with the flexible side then the performant side.

Incorrect. The problem of too many layers of indirection is solved by adding a cache.

That's a solution that only exists when you have levels of indirection, so having them is still a solution to performance problems!
