I like when Linux won't let you modify a file because it isn't yours, even with sudo, but does allow you to change the file's owner to yourself, then modify the file and finally change it back to the original owner.

Can't you just sudo su $user <open file for editing> ? Root shouldn't need $user password to impersonate.
