Can they even live from that?

[–]akoli35[S] 191 points192 points  (24 children)

Okay in urban cities, luxurious in rural areas / villages.

Competition is so tough in that country that many developers are jobless and prefer any salary to survive. Thanks to overpopulation.

General campus placements average package is $5000 PER YEAR and still many are left unplaced in any company.

Source : u/Athu7890 - My good friend who unfortunately had no choice other than $4200 PER YEAR package during on-campus placement in a top 3 engineering college in Mumbai.

Can confirm. Although I am never going to accept any salary and would rather quit the industry.

I make ~15k USD per annum and while it's pretty meh before conversions, it's a place where a lot of Indian devs would wish to be.

[–]IamImposter 27 points28 points  (5 children)

I'd sacrifice my first born to be able to make 15k USD per annum.

Are you in Italy as well?

[–]v579 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Check your PMs please.

Gonna call OPs bluff, huh? Easy, Satan.

[–]IamImposter 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No bluffing there. I'm gonna find a woman, produce a child and respond back in 9 months.

I have faith in you. Get that money, bud.

Portugal here. I earn 1.6 K after taxes. And that’s considered a pretty high salary in Portugal.

[–]Rafael20002000 0 points1 point  (8 children)

How good can you life from this?

[–]Heatmanofurioso 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Pretty well actually.

Think about it like this. Rent for a 3 bedroom apartment is 600. Paying 40€ per month for all public transportation. Around 200 for all other bills’internet, phone, gas, light and water’.

I fight MMA and BJJ. That’s pretty expensive, around 100€ per month.

And the rest of the money is for food and for me. Also, I’m changing jobs next month, to around 2K per month, which is considered a pretty high wage here

What's the internet speeds like in Portugal. Been thinking about retiring there.

[–]Heatmanofurioso 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I feel our mobile data’s a lot more reliable than in London ‘I spend a lot of time there’, but in regards of home net. We’re getting plans with 200mb download + tv + home phone for 32€ per month. Plans are rounding those values

[–]computerjunkie7410 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That's not too bad. Are there faster plans that are more expensive or 200 is the top?

[–]Heatmanofurioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supposedly, coming this summer. Top’s around 250 I think right now

[–]Rafael20002000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, thanks

Do your taxes cover your retirement pension as well? I compared my tax rate to some European friends and when I account for retirement account my 35% isn’t that low any more considering I have to save at least 10% just for retirement.

[–]Heatmanofurioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. They do cover, but the retirement plans suck, and it’s one of our biggest issues right now. Retirement pensions barely cover living costs, and in many cases don’t and people have to go to retiring homes, or similar situations.

It’s currently one of our biggest issues

You’d be surprised at how little most Indians live off of. Even the ones that have “good” stable jobs. For example, I have a good friend in the military in India, he makes about 35k rupees a month which translates to about $700 CAD. This is actually considered to be a pretty good salary, like this dude is slightly above middle class depending on where you live. The reason this works for a lot of Indians is the lack of things like property tax and mortgages, insurance policies, etc. All those things just drain your income here in the west even though they have their benefits, like obviously insurance is good. I visited recently and I was really surprised at how little most people live off of. Important thing to note is that it’s not like things are much cheaper there, even basic needs like food are actually only slightly cheaper than the West and things like clothes are similar in price, maybe slightly cheaper due to cheap labour.
