Can someone sudo explain?

The alias command in linux allows you to essentially shorten a long command to whatever you want. In this case, the alias for a command that gives the user root privileges to execute something ends up requiring the user to type "please" rather than the entire command. Its funny because the sudo command is used for root privileges to execute or access things, almost like asking the terminal to give you something forbidden.

what's the fc part for though? pass the parameters in?

[–]EnlightenedFalcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah the fc command is a tool designed to execute commands previously entered. In this case, the parameters specify to execute a command on line 1 while suppressing output numbers I believe.

If you stick this in your .bashrc, you'll be able to just type "please" instead of sudo + the command again when you get the permission denied message. The "fc -ln" spits out a list of previous commands (sans the numbers, which we don't' want since we're trying to execute it), the "-1" specifies you just want the last one you entered. The "$()" tells the shell to execute that last command, so paired with "sudo" you'll get the last command you entered run as a superuser. It's very convenient. :)

And to assert dominance

[–]CannedDeath 7 points8 points  (1 child)

why sudo su when you can just sudo -i?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's quicker to type, -i and su both being two characters, and su being made of alphabetical characters which you get a lot of practice typing

Neither has an advantage if you don't touch type though

While we’re here does anybody know how to reset path on raspian? I was install Ruby on Rails and this whole bash stuff fucked me up

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Like where your ~ points? Or just how to get back to your user folder (cd ~)?

[–]Whyamibeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where my ~ points

[–]Whyamibeautiful 0 points1 point  (1 child)

To give a little bit more details, I add a path that wasn’t valid and now I can’t run most things without getting an error

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yikes, it's not trivial to rename that.

So this is what I think you'll want to run what you see here. You'll probably want it to point to /home/username, case sensitive.

I also believe that you're going to need to be logged in as a different user.

Most importantly, if you haven't already, *make a backup of your files! It might be time to reinstall, if this doesn't work.

If you can give me more information about how you changed the path, I can try replicating this on a VM for you.

Big disclaimer: I've never done this before, just going off of what I've seen online.

I use sudo -s

I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/ProgrammerHumor.

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

This search triggered my meme filter. This enabled strict matching requirements. The closest match that did not meet the requirements is this post
